Default Applied for Citi Diamond Preferred

Why? A couple of reasons. First, I have only one Mastercard with a 2k limit, which it wouldn't surprise me if Barclay's does some AA on me when they soft me and find the new accounts I got. I would like to have at least one Mastercard, two would be great.

Also Citi is like the girl you can't get. I've app'd with them since early last year, not recently, but was rejected everytime, typically for stupid reasons. They hate me. I mean I got Amex, but I couldn't get Citi if I paid them. I've had Amex, Chase, Discover, BOA, US Bank, etc, but could never get Citi.

So that's why. And frankly, since I got the 15-30 day notice (I think that's how many days it said) that's likely to be yet another thumbs down. (not guaranteed but if I were a betting man, my money would be on "declined"). But I figured what the hell, only an EX inquiry to burn to find out.....

Usually they had already sent me the declined email I assume it was a short day for them with the holiday which is why I wasn't declined yet, but I'm sure that email will come by Wed or Thurs with the "you're meat" notice. I'm not going to recon, I've done that before and calling is a waste of time I can tell you from past experience, I've heard that sending them a letter works, just not sure I care THAT much about it. I mean if I have to beg, the hell with it basically!

Just figured I'd give an update. I hadn't heard anything where usually they've declined me within 48 hours. I called their app status line and got the expected "Unfortunately we are unable to approve you at this time....".

So, it is what it is, and I get the message loud and clear that they do not want my business. I just had to give it a shot. I'll never regret now that I didn't at least give it an effort.

Don't have anything else I want that I can get, so until something comes along that I do want, I guess I'm done apping.

Don't feel bad 99, were on the same boat with the diamond pref. I actually applied twice, and got denied, twice. But I still have the Thank you pref, so it's not a total loss, but maybe down the road you'll get it, who knows...

Sorry to hear that. Did they say for what reason they denied you? Also, how many times total have you applied for any citi on any of their cards? Could also include store cards not just major cards.

I don't feel bad at all. I tried and you just don't win em all. I at least gave it a shot. But I'm not going to waste more inquiries on them, when it's very obvious they don't want my business.

They didn't give the reasons but I would take a WAG the reasons will include inquiries and new accounts at the top of the laundry list, then towards the bottom probably not carrying a high enough balance on a revolving line to suit their thirst for profit.

Let's see if I recall 3 times in 2011 and twice last year. Denied every time without fail. It was almost funny - in 2011 they first denied me for "not carrying a balance on any revolving" line of credit or something to that effect basically they didn't like 0 balance in revolving, so I let a small balance hit and applied again about 2 months later - denied due to "too many inquiries". At that point, I just laughed about the futility of dealing with a company like that.

Not even sure why I bothered except what you can't get is always sweeter, as the saying goes. But there comes a point you just have to acknowledge it's pointless. I think that point is now. If I was a smarter chimp, I would have figured that out last year, but as I said, at least this way I'll never look back and wonder what if!

So, guys, they have made it pretty clear they don't want me as a customer, and I accept their decision. I will look elsewhere for a new Mastercard product at some point later this year, ideally a World card. But I don't really have anything in mind at the moment and nothing that excites me, so it can be in summer or later and that's cool.

99- That's weird. I say this because I accidentally carried a 1$ balance (it was the myfico free trial) and then I applied for the Citi Forward and Discover More and both approved. I usually don't carry balances and I didn't want to carry one, but it snuck on there, and they approved me (I have yet to carry a balance with them, but at least they get their money before the statement cuts so I don't have to worry about it later.) They can be a stickler for granting credit from what I have read and seen.

My understanding based on personal experience as well as reading more than one posting from others is, you MUST have a balance showing on a revolving line to be approved for Citi. One guy had high 780 scores, pretty close to a perfect credit profile even for Citi, but they declined him on the basis he didn't have a balance on a revolving line. (This was a recent post on the FICO forums).

It probably wasn't the greatest idea even to waste the inquiry, but like I said I never want to look back and say gee what if I would have done that. Now I don't have to wonder I can just know that they do not want my business and it isn't an option. I've wasted more than enough inquiries on this weird company. Weird is ok to some degree, I can totally relate, but they seem above and beyond.

And, yes, I fully agree with their right to run their business as they see fit. I don't really mind the decline, I'm not angry or upset even over a burned inquiry (you never know till you try). It's probably a favor in the long run. I have some cards and issuers now that I'm pretty happy with. Was just looking to complete the collection so to speak. It will just be done at a later time with another bank.

To be honest with you, I agree with what you said about it being a "favor" to you that they declined you. I really haven't been very impressed with my experience with Citi since opening my accounts this past summer. The Thank You rewards structure is lackluster at best, the Diamond Preferred card is essentially useless after the 0% intro period since it doesn't even earn those Thank You points, and the website and CS just fail in my opinion. I'll probably be closing my accounts once I get the balance paid off that I've been carrying on my DP. Just keep on truckin' man -- there's bigger and better fish to fry than Citi.

Thanks Rat. Don't close them down though - you took the hits. Just buy a pack of gum every now and then and make them WISH you'd close it

I got the reason for the decline yesterday in the mail. Only reason listed was "too many new accounts", verbiage to that effect. Just wanted to share. Got a free credit report out of it, though I guess I'd rather pay and not have the inquiry...but hey....
