Default App'd for Barclays Rewards Mastercard

I figured to get turned down for sure with the inquires - dealer put 6 of them on TU on 9/20 when I bought a car.

Instead much to my shock, instant approval. But a 2k limit.

So knowing they are good with recon, I called up and asked the analyst for something higher. They would not do it, wouldn't budge at all, the analyst said I needed a longer time of paying my bills on time even though she acknowledged all of them have been. I was like well how much longer, I've had my longest current card almost a year and that has over a 10k limit. She said they can't give specifics just longer.

Even Target gave me 1k so I don't know whether to be happy or unhappy. Maybe this is some of the "toy limit" thing going on.

I'm sure it will grow in time, but with a 2k limit it's just not going to be a "go-to" card. But having a Mastercard is good I guess.

Just an FYI for anyone who cares.

I'd recon my recon but I think it's a brick wall. You can tell when it's just the person you are talking with and the brick wall and this is the brick wall.

This offer looks similar to their Priceline card, which gives a 2% statement credit on everything.

I think in terms of reward it is pretty close, though if I recall it's 2% on groceries gas and utilities (whatever counts as that) and 1% on everything else.

Ironically I had an Apple Financing Visa early this year with a 2.5k limit. I brought that up in the recon, no dice they weren't budging.

It would almost be good if they told you what you were approved for, THEN allowed you to cancel the app (but take the hit) if you wished and make it basically a decline. I don't want to close another card so it stays, but if it doesn't grow, it won't see much use.

I'll go for a CLI in 6 months, if they say no, then it's going to hit the sock drawer so to speak.

On the bright side, it will curb any apping for 6 months as they frown upon that. On the minus side, now I gotta worry if the Target and Discover cards showing up will freak them out enough to CLD me or shut me down.

Oh well if they do, they do I guess.

HA Thanks Rat! Good one! When I think about it rationally, 2k isn't really a toy limit, it's just a LOT lower than my highest limit cards. But for sure, no new credit card apps for me for 6 months.

I've been meaning to ask you - what do you think of Citi? I thought of another futile app with them, obviously it won't happen anytime soon now, but what do you think of them compared to say Chase or Discover?

Man, as much as I want to like Citi, they really don't make it easy for me. Even after their most recent site upgrade, I still feel like it leaves much to be desired. They send me marketing offers constantly for services I already utilize, their rewards system is lackluster at best, and they sent me an offer for "help" with hurricane relief at the same time that they denied my Simplicity application and Diamond Preferred limit increase. Meanwhile Chase was throwing themselves at me with $7000 worth of CSP and Amazon approvals. Some people absolutely love them, but I find them to be "meh" at best.

Their "help" probably means you can make your payment later and they won't charge you interest if you live in an area hit by the hurricane. Nice, but if you're in that situation your credit cards might be the least of your worries.

Ok I was just curious. I like Chase, doubt I'll try to get back in with them but I'd never say never. If it happens it would be in 6 months, I can't app now or Barclays will go all AA on me and I'd like to keep their card if possible since I took the hit for it. But in 6 months, if I do app, Chase will be the bank most likely. Or the US Bank Flex Perks. Or both.

Chase and Discover are my two favorite issuers. Website interface is important to me, and their sites are both very user friendly, as you know. I've also had the best customer service with them, though I have had a couple mildly disturbing experiences with Discover's online chat recently. As much as I wanted to deny it, the past 2 times I used it, it seemed like they were switching over to the dreaded scripted responses for which Crapital One has instilled such hatred into our hearts. Maybe it's just a seasonal thing or something...

I've done lots of cc apps both before and after getting my Priceline card and haven't heard any complaints from Barclays about it.
