Bank of America Platinum Plus MasterCard being discontinued?

Postby sakhalin » Wed Oct 24, 2012 9:40 pm

I have a Bank of America Platinum Plus MasterCard. It's my first credit card, got it back in 2009. It expires next month, so I should be getting a new one in the mail soon. But I think BoA discontinued this card? So what will they send me? BankAmericard or something?

Also, I don't really plan to use this card anymore. Should I just cancel it, or let my new card come in but never call to activate it? I don't want to deal with Bank of America anymore.

It will likely be another Platinum Plus MasterCard unless they decide to upgrade you to something else. I have a BofA Accelerated Cash Rewards Amex which has not been avaialble to new customers for quite some time now yet they have not closed the account or forced a new product on me.

If the card will no longer be of use to you then close it. The history will hopefully remain on your bureau for 10 years (sometimes they fall off after only a few years though). This is important because its opening date will be factored into your average age of account despite being closed. A large portion of your FICO score is length of credit which is why this is important. Also be sure that you have other credit cards with acceptable credit lines before you close down the BofA MasterCard so that the loss of its credit line doesn't impact your debt to credit ratio.

Oh, I see, thanks for the info. My BoA Mastercard has a CL of $800. My Citi one is $3300, and my Discover one is $2000, so I think I'll be fine if I close it. But I might just buy a few items here and there on that card and keep it active for awhile. After all, it is my first card, and it has no annual fee. I just really dislike BoA is all lol

None of this prevents you from asking for a product change and credit line increase. Maybe you can find a BoA product you actually want.

I have a BOFA Americard Cash Rewards, it's been good to me so far and is a decent card for gas (that's really what I use it for), but that is if you can put up with Bank of America and their not so great CS.

I agree with Snowman, the BofA Cash Rewards card is one of their better offerings as long as you always pay in full.

I'd suggest keeping the account open to help your credit report even if you don't use BofA for your other accounts.

Would it be a hard pull if I asked to PC my card to the Cash Rewards? My plat. plus has been in good standing, never late, never carried a balance.

It will not be a hard inquiry for the upgrade. A CLI request; however, would result in an inquiy.

I would guess you will get the cash back card . when First card went out of business around 2001 I was sent a Bank 1 card since you have an account with them they have to send you a card. cash back would be my guess.

I just PC'd this card to the Accelerated Rewards Amex. No inquiry or anything. I never, ever used this Plat Plus Visa, and have had it since 2006. Plus they never gave me CLI's. The new card has better rewards possibilities, and maybe more CLI friendly. Hopefully I will use the new card more, plus it looks nicer :oooo

Not sure if it matters but I did the PC via the online chat.
