I would agree with the general consensus that so-called "platinum" cards as a higher caliber card. Everything is platinum at this point -- gold of course has no real meaning as well, though every time I see a gold card (excluding AMEX) I automatically think sub-prime. (I do have a "gold" card to rebuild my credit. And I don't have a real reason why I exclude AMEX mentally.)

They should really standardize card tiers a bit more...based off benefits, annual fee (or the lack thereof), credit limit, class (student, rebuilder, etc.), and so on. lol

A lot of credit unions still offer gold cards and many times they are really good cards. Having grown up in the 80s I have a soft spot in my heart for gold cards. But you have a point, those are mostly extinct here in the States. In a lot of other countries Gold cards are still a high standard.

If Chase offered a new Diamond Kryptonium card next week for excellent credit / high net worth clients, Orchard and First Premiere would have them by next month. The prestige has been diluted.

If there was a Visa Kryptonite that was green, I would get it, even if the rewards were negative 1%!

Chase kills me. They have a commercial where all these household items are being painted gold and they finally get to a credit card that is painted gold. They state that just because something is gold does not make it better. They are obviously putting the smack down on the Amex Gold.

Chase has that awful vertical Slate card (instead of Platinum) and Sapphire instead of Signature/World (which, actually they are Signature and World....) And from what I understand the front of the card is blank; the Visa Signature and account number are on the back.

I wish instead they would offer a real improvement like adding the EMV Chip so that the cards can be used in Europe! I have no issues with Chase but they are trying to hard to be different (account number on back, vertical card) without offering any real improvements. So it makes me laugh that they slam Amex. Maybe Amex should have a commercial about how naming cards after rocks and precious metals doesn't make them better....

They discontinued a former program I was in and replaced it with Slate. Instead of a rewards program they rolled out "Blueprint", which is nothing more than an accounting gimmick to raise your minimum payment so you pay the balance off faster.

At first I was enamored with the vertical design, but the lack of raised letters and numbers makes the card useless at some of the few remaining merchants that use the old mechanical imprint machines...I know, you don't see them often, but I encountered one in a restaurant in Luzern, Switzerland just last month.

Yeah, I have had my Chase MasterCard since it was a Chase Manhattan MasterCard. They sent a ton of literature about how once my current Platinum card expired I would receive a Slate card. I thought, "whatever, as long as my credit line and APR don't change." Well, it came this spring and I couldn't believe it was vertical. I was so ticked. So I did the online customer service feature and explained that I did not want the vertical card and they said no problem and sent me a horizontal Slate card with the normal numbers and letters. The one thing that irretates me with Chase as of late is that they have taken the Cardmember Since dates off.

So if you do not care for it you should be able to request a "normal" horizontal card. It is interesting that you had trouble in Europe with the "flat" numbers on the Slate card because a lot of Visa Electron cards in Europe have that. Of course, they all use Chip and PIN so there would not be a reason to have to imprint the card....
