Default Is Visa the same as Mastercard?

I know this is a dumb question but is Visa the same as Mastercard? Like do both of them operate as the same company or is each of them separate from one another?

I'm 99% sure they are different but then why does every store take both Visa and Mastercard and not just one of them?

Visa is not the same as Mastercard. Two different companies but since they are the two biggest almost every store accepts both of them.

LOL if they were the same company then that would be like one major big anti-trust case waiting to happen

Visa may not be the same as Mastercard but in terms of acceptance in the United States it's more or less the same. You will be hard pressed to find a merchant that accepts one but not the other in this country.

Upon applying for a Citi card today the option was given to select either a Visa or Mastercard. Pursuant to the anti-trust settlements large banks like Citi must offer both options.
