Lex you are right. Apparently though BC has no option to upgrade/convert to the WEMC version. Even speaking at many levels today at BC they say they do not see any option in their system to convert like they do other cards :(

While I agree that it is a customer's choice to allocate spend and close cards if the value is missing, may I suggest that we don't approach the matter with such a DYKWIA attitude?

Barclays could have left the card how it was. Instead, they chose to increase the features on everyone's card. Even if you don't get a WEMC, you still get an extra 30 days to redeem points and a chip + PIN card. No other major bank currently offers chip + PIN.

And, quite frankly, how many of us are going to use the WEMC perks? Are you planning on requesting an airport concierge, Wildcat_1? Do you plan on utilizing the free upgrade from full-fare coach to business on Etihad when you fly to Dubai, Member? Aside from having a fancy label on our plastic, what difference does the World Elite label actually make to any of us?

DJ, while you are right about a number of the WEMC benefits being a little crazy, I do use the hotel perks, nice to have this portfolio available in addition to AMEX Fine Hotels & Visa Signature plus I also agree with TS, it is the principle. If new card signers get the WEMC version as paying AF Arrival+ then also as existing Arrival AF members we should get the same. I would be happy if there was an offer to convert like Chase does when moving across product or even if Barclays said they would do via soft pull etc, happy to do it but to hear that the only option (if you want the card) is to close your account and re-apply for new is ridiculous in this day and age and not something that other issuers would ever risk (losing an account on the chance you will reapply) in my opinion.

It is the principle of the thing. They are telling good current holders of the card who have given them business to go pound sand, while new people they may not have history with are welcomed right into the club. Sorry, but that sends a message loud and clear and it's not one I want to hear.

Take care of your current customers, after all we can be someone else's customer if we feel like it.

Also if you really don't care about it, why did you push so hard both via secure message and Twitter to get it, if it really does make any difference? Not meaning to completely be a smart ass but the question is valid.

My push was to get the chip+PIN version here before our trip. Figured there was no harm in asking while I already had contact. Sorry if my posts conveyed otherwise.

Having just spoken to a card member service agent he said that there was no specific criteria to meet for current card members, and that the only consideration would be is if you moved up a tax bracket. So it sounds like they are trying to make the world elite card more prestigious and difficult to get, which is fine.

Just spoke to an agent with Barclaycard, he said there was no criteria to explicitly meet and there are no upgrade offers. I would anticipate there will be invites after certain thresholds are met, but he did say that he was advised by superiors the only consideration to the upgrade would be a change in the customers tax bracket. Basically they made the World Elite card more prestigious and targeted towards users who will put large purchases on the card. Overall, its not a bad call, the card is still great.
