"Upgrading" To Citi Premier

Postby diabloargentino » Tue Mar 18, 2014 9:22 pm

Hi Guys -

First time posting, hope I'm doing so on the right subtopic.

I'm a Citi Preferred member, been so for a bit. I got a letter in the mail to upgrade to Premier - this was a little more personal than just spam. It gives me a special "invitation code" that I simply type in on the link they provide and I would assume that easily upgrades me to Premier.

While I do want to make the upgrade to Premier, I don't want to miss out on the promotions going on for applying for one so I called. My god, what a joke Citi! Got transferred to 6 different people in different departments, all who were clueless.

I simply wanted to know if I upgrade through this letter I got in the mail, would I be eligible for the promotions? That being said, I believe the answer is no.

So the question becomes - do I just separately apply for the Citi Premier even though I have a preferred? I would prefer to consolidate and just have one card and the main issue would be to have the same account as I've been a customer for 6+ years, have great pay history, activity, etc. so I feel if I apply separately, I'd lose all of that.

I would be willing to meet in the middle and "upgrade" with this invitation and have my annual fee waived for year 1 but miss out on the 50,000 points offer that is also being promoted. Anyone have some advice/thoughts/opinions on my situation? Citi reps are clueless so hoping someone is nice enough to lend a hand here.

Thanks in advance!

- Dave

Typically if you want the promotion points with any lender you have to apply for that card rather than upgrade a current card - that's just how it is.

So if you want the points you are pretty much going to have to apply for a new card unless you can talk the EO into giving them to you with the upgrade. I wouldn't think that would be successful but stranger things have happened. So just forget the reps and go right to the EO because the reps most likely won't be able to do a thing for you - the EO can but whether they will, remains to be seen.
