Anyone experienced problems with EMV cards?

Postby Pave » Mon Mar 17, 2014 10:53 pm

The following happened to me lately, and I wonder if others have been experiencing similar problems...

I ordered fast food for lunch and tried to pay with my EMV chip Mastercard. The vendor pushed the card into the EMV slot in their terminal, waited for a while, and told me that the card does not work. So I paid in cash...
After I had finished eating my lunch the whole EMV thing still bothered me and I decided to check my card transactions on the mobile app. The transaction for the lunch was pending on my card. I went back to the vendor and he said something like "The transaction could not be processed. We have had problems with these chip cards. Follow up and come back if the transaction does not drop off. Don't call the bank."

After one week the transaction finally disappeared. Fine, until... Two days later I get a replacement card with a new number and a letter starting "Your account security is our top priority..." blaa blaa.

I can't be sure that the EMV problem triggered the security issue with my card, but the timing would really much suggest so.

If the transaction was showing as pending and then dropped off, the transaction was approved and then voided. It sounds like the merchant removed the EMV chip before the transaction had finished. The merchant has to wait until the terminal asks them to remove the card.

I doubt it had anything to do with the card being replaced.

The first time I tried using the reader the seasoned employee (ive seen her for years since i was a kid)- she said "its a rich company but yet they don't want to update their own equipment".

the readers are on because on the screen it showed "reading" but then it showed "error"..

try it some day!

Tried it in 5 new readers. Errored 5 times. Glad they read the stripe as well.
Gold American Express, since 1979,
back when it meant something.
And a few other cash back cards as well.

Impossible to determine causality from what you've posted but I wouldn't assume so. Contact the card company to verify if you're worried about it. There are countless possible causes for your replacement card.

They only read the magnetic stripe as the chip reader hasn't been turned on. Once the readers are turned on any swipe will prompt you to insert the card.
