Should I wait to apply for the Barclaycard Arrival?

Postby otter » Mon Mar 10, 2014 11:20 pm

I know at some point I am going to apply for the Arrival although I'm not sure whether I will apply for the one with the AF or the no fee one. I need a travel card and the Arrival meets my needs better than most because I plan on going on "mini" road trips out of town every other weekend which are far enough to require one or two night hotel stays. I don't really fly enough to justify getting an airline card (and truth be told, I hate flying and usually fly when my company buys the ticket or if I have to go to Florida for a family emergency. If you've ever flown out of/into Casper WY, you'd know why; small jets + perpetual strong gusts = turbulence every flight).

I know if I applied today, I would almost surely be accepted. My concern is that I want to make sure I get the World MC- I don't want to have another plat mc. I have opened four accounts this year and have around 2 hard pulls on each of the three in the past four months. So my plan is to wait three months so my new credit and hard pulls age a bit and then I will surely get a World MC.

On the other hand, part me me wants to pull the trigger because its not likely that Barclays would give me another card less than my other Barclaycard- Sallie Mae at $5780 CL). I know Barclays is sometimes inconsistent about how they give World status- sometimes giving World MC's under $5000 and sometimes not giving World status even with a CL over $5000. Plus it seems likely that eventually they will nerf the initial spending bonus and it would suck if I couldn't get the $440 (or $220 if I decide to get the no AF version).

So should I pull the trigger now or wait a few months? I know no one could predict what Barclay would do, but what would you do if you were me? Also my utilization is around 8% now, but should be around 2-3$ tops in a few months.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

I would think that if you went for the annual fee version it would very likely have a $5K + limit and World status. Banks these days try as hard as they can to give Signature and World status because they net a higher swipe fee from merchants over gold or platinum. That higher swipe fee helps them pay for the rewards.

I know that Barclay's does not like to see a lot of new accounts opened after one of their cards is opened, but I am not sure how they will view the four new accounts opened in 2014 overall. The 8% utilization is excellent so that shouldn't be a problem but I am not sure how they will view the recent new credit lines.

I honestly don't know what I would do if it were me. On one hand, the current sign up bonus is great and it would be a bummer to wait a few months and have the bonus be devalued. At the very least, Barclay's is known to have easy recons; so if you were to go for it now and either be declined or get a low CL; you could always recon after you speak to an agent about why you need/want the new card.

Was there a specific perk you were looking for with World? My Citibank Dividend was a World for a few years and I never really understood what extra fluff came with it. I recently upgraded to World Elite and I can see more benefits now including concierge.

I opened two accounts in 2013 before applying for my Arrival WMC in Jan 2014. One in June then another in November. I also did CLI on two cards in June 13. Had no issues getting my Arrival with a FICO of ~784 (can't remember exactly).

Not sure what you should do about applying but if you decide to do so make sure to call in for the 1K spend min as the online offer is now 3K.
Citi Forward ($10.1K), AmEx Blue Cash Everyday ($30K), Chase Freedom ($12.4K), Discover it ($5.5K), Barclaycard Arrival ($12.5K), L.L. Bean Visa ($5K). FICO 806 (TU), 812 (EQ), 806 (EX).

If you have a signature card, you're really not getting much out of world, if anything at all. Unless there's a very specific perk in the World card that you are looking for, like rental car insurance in specific countries. If you don't have a signature card, then I could see the benefits of a world card.

The better answer would always be to wait it out and let your score settle a bit. But if you can't wait, you could always give it a try now :P

I'm sure Barclay's won't much like the new accounts I've opened since I got their card, but you know, I can't live life in fear of what if Amex does an F/R on me or what if Barclay's shuts me down because I got a few new accounts or what if Chase decides I'm more of a PITA to them than I'm worth, or whatever. Live your life the way you want and let them compete for your business. If they don't want it, do business with those who do.

I would say go for it Otter what do you have to lose besides an INQ? If you can afford that and maybe a hit to AAoA I say why not there is truly only one way to find out. That would be going to MyFICO and asking them what you should do. Just kidding!!!! Apply of course. We know their answer already (garden).

Yea man, just do it! Unless you're financing a new car, or taking on a mortgage/refinance anytime soon, but I'm guessing that's not in your near future :D

In the end, the margins on these rewards are only a few hundred bucks. Nothing to kill yourself over, right? :)

Well, I pulled the trigger and approved! Not with World MC status and only $4000, but Barclay's been good with CLI's so far so I'll definitely put that card to good use. Can't wait to get my $440 bonus- which shouldn't take too long.

Congrats that's awesome! I'm sure you will grow that card nicely.

Seriously as far as the FICO people, and them recommending you wait, there is some truth that if you wait you MAY get a larger limit. That assumes that your income or credit is going to substantially improve in the interim, or that your other limits are going to go up though. I had opened an FNBO card when my highest limit was 5800 and they gave me 5600. A year later my highest limit was 13,500 and they gave me 13,600. So it also depends on if they match/try to beat your current limits.

Personally I'd say get the card now and enjoy it and grow it and don't live for tomorrow because you never know what tomorrow will bring (or even if tomorrow will come for each of us we just never know). Too many people live always planning for years in the future, it's like hell I don't know what next week will bring let alone next year or 10 years from now. Good for you for going for the gusto and getting the card!

I also closed my WalMart Discover card to keep my personal rule of "Eight is Enough". The WalMart card really didn't do a whole lot for me... since (1) I can get my FICO score with other cards now (2) I can get cash back when shopping at Wal Mart (and elsewhere) and have it count as a purchase, not an advance with Discover It (3) If I really wanted to purchase something and pay no interest, I still have 6 cards with 0% rate as opposed to the WalMart card where I have to jump through hoops to get no interest.

So I'm happy with my cards for now... if I find another card I like, Wells Fargo is the next card in danger of the chopping block../

I'd be worried about that Duck Card too since you aren't a member of OCCU (and can't be, not living in their service area). I'm surprised you still have that. As flaky as they are, I would not trust them. Maybe that should be the first to go before Wells Fargo and yeah I know WF is pretty bad. You are putting together a nice collection of cards.
