Two new cards added to the stash...

Postby otter » Mon Jan 20, 2014 11:12 pm

So I was sitting in the garden Saturday contemplating the gold-plated titanium spade studded with 1/2 carat diamonds I would earn if I stayed there just a while longer when Obi-wan appeared before me and said "Freedom!" before quickly disappearing.

After a moment, I realized he wanted me to app for the chase Freedom, so I did and...

7-10 message. So much for my Jedi powers. Probably another denial by Chase who obviously hates my guts. They probably have me blacklisted because years ago I called one of their rude customer service people a bad word (which rhymes with what a football team does on fourth down... and I don't mean "kick a field goal") I call their backdoor number and the lady tells me I need to call their verification dept which isn't open on weekends.

Screw them I say. I'm applying for the Sallie Mae card by Barclay. Got an instant approval there for $3000.

Back to the Freedom card, now... I call their number tonite and to my surprise- approved for $2200!

Even though the Freedom was the card I've been lusting over for months, I'm actually more excited about the Sallie Mae card since I spend about $250 each in gas and groceries a month. This all changes how I look at my cards, though and the dynamics of who gets the swipes:
  • The two secured cards- I've been thinking of getting rid of the Wells Fargo secured card, but if I use it three times a month(for small purchases) I don't get charged a checking account fee. I do most of my banking with Schwab, but keep the WF checking account because it's good to have a local bank. Maybe after I get the $100 spend bonus with Chase, I'll apply for an unsecured WF card, get their 5% 6 month bonus and ditch the secured card. As for the BoA cash card, it's less than the Sallie Mae cash back, but I'll wait until it graduates to see what kind of CLI I get.
  • Barclaycard Rewards- once I get the 6 month CLI, I move it over to the Sallie Mae card and close this puppy.
  • Discover It- If the categories are right, I'll use this.
  • WalMart Discover- It's a GE card, so I can count on CLI's if I use it every so often.
  • PayPal Extras- Ditto WalMart Discover. Plus, if Freedom or Discover aren'tdoing restaurants that quarter, I'll use at restaurants.
  • BCE- Oh, I'll stay in the family.. just don't expect me home for dinner,Mom... tonight or any night! I don't care what the old dude with the gigantic nose used to say on Amex commercials... I am leaving home without it- it's going in the sock drawer.
  • The Duck Card- I have a soft spot in my heart for the Duck Card because they gave me my first (and currently only five digit CL), so I'll use it for reoccurring charges like my cell bill, insurance, etc).

Anyone else have any suggestions? Any other cards I need? Otherwise I stay in the garden... until I find another card I like!

I think Don's post is funnier than Otter's!

If they want you to call verification it means you are approved they just want to verify your info. Otherwise they wouldn't bother with it. Trust me I speak from experience. If you are declined they don't bother verifying you it makes no sense. So that's always a good sign.

So congrats on that though I saw from FICO you had gotten it but were a little disappointed with the limit.
Keep in mind in July of 2012 I app'd for Freedom and they gave me a 2k limit. I closed it soon after but now I have two cards with Chase and a total of 12k in limits between them. So you can move up with them if you give it time.

Not sure you "need" any cards, cards really aren't a need in any case but a want. Let's face it we could go back to cash if we wanted to and be perfectly fine. I do think someday our corrupt fascist government will outlaw cash transactions and force everything to be done in a way they can monitor "for our safety and security" in the holy name of fighting "terrorism" of course, but that's yet to come and just my gut feeling on it. But for right now we can sure live by cash if we want to. So it depends on your needs but I think you look set judging by the cards I see in your signature.

If I were to close any of them it would be the two 300 limit cards. IF and ONLY if the Wells Fargo would unsecure with a CLI in say a year I'd keep it, otherwise, I'd say see ya to that one. I know the BofA will unsecure and they usually give a decent CLI as well so I'd give that a chance even though it's kind of useless to you right now. Otherwise I'd keep what you have and work on getting the limits up on some of them. Nice collection there.

I like the idea of having a lender like Chase/Discover backing me up if I get ripped off. FDIC/IRS certainly isn't gonna help you with cash. Ha.

True, but then again, there are restrictions on your protections using even credit cards, and sometimes it comes down to "he said/she said" anyway. You can always sue in small claims if the merchant is local and you have proof and a good case.

At least with cash you can't be tracked.

Good point, cash, for all your illegal needs!

I hope I never have to go to small claims over anything. Courtrooms make me nervous, didn't even like being in one for my courthouse wedding.

It doesn't have to be an illegal need - maybe you just feel the government could make better use of your tax dollars doing something useful instead of worrying about how much you spend on soap at the grocery store and the like. Maybe you're someone who would prefer we don't become a society that demands your SS# to buy a loaf of bread, and says "papers please" everywhere you go, and that you are one of the few these days who actually believe in "innocent until proven guilty" and you should not have to explain yourself for everything you say do and think.

It's another issue but I'm getting tired of the police state mentality in this country these days, with constant government surveillance, the cops shaking people down and trying to intimidate the sheeple and all the stuff that would make you think we live in some Nazi reich. If wanting the freedom we hear so much that we have makes me a criminal then I'm guilty.

All I can say is, that is so depressingly true.
