I used to get nothing but occasional offers from AmEx (they're obsessed for some reason I can't figure out). But after I raised my credit score a few months ago, I started getting 4-5 banks sending offers, each repeating themselves every 1-2 weeks. Now that I've applied for 2 cards, and one has reported, it seems to have slowed down. I haven't had a non-AmEx offer for a couple weeks now. Which is fine - I'm done for this cycle.
The only constant is AmEx. What they offer depends on my credit at the time, but they're always offering something. Even when I fell onto CreditOne's radar, AmEx was still there, offering charge cards. It's almost like getting a free credit report. The AmEx Mail Offer Index.
They consistently offer more generous terms than anyone else, it's like they think I'm a different person than the other banks do. But I'm not the high flyer they think I am, so unfortunately I find their cards impractical. The only exception is BCE, but I don't really need that either, and they've only had the insight to offer that once. That was shortly after I applied to Discover - so I wonder if that inquiry is what prompted it. After that they returned to the endless "Blue Sky" mailers. Once they drop me back to charge card offers, I'll know my Discover balance has reported.

I used to receive offers all the time but now that I have nearly all the major card issuers (and even multiples from the same issuers) I don't receive that many anymore. The last few were a BarclayCard Ring and a Fry's (Kroger) 123 Rewards Visa.

Not really. I pretty much never travel, and if I do, I don't fly. I've ridden one airplane in my adult life, and that was before the TSA. As far as charge cards, I admit I haven't really researched what the appeal of them is. But I don't like annual fees so that cuts them off regardless. The prestige factor (or the perception of it) isn't important either (so Visa Black is out lol).

I'm low income and single, so I'm basically not the type AmEx is geared towards. The BCE is their one card I find interesting, and they sent a tempting signup offer for that card ($250 for $1000 spend). But I realized I wouldn't have much use for it after the bonus, and I pretty much expected the $1000 spend (actually a planned $1600 single purchase) to trigger an FR. Since I wouldn't cooperate with that, I'd never see the $250.
I got a Sallie Mae 5% for the stuff BCE would have covered. SM has low spending limits but it works for my needs.

I feel compelled that I should say something about the original topic, so here goes:
I think Visa Black might appeal to 2 groups of people:
1) People who want to look richer than they really are, and are willing to pay $495/year for the image. I've seen the ads and I agree with the OP that they're pretty much selling phony prestige.
2) People who actually have the money to justify that annual fee, but don't have good enough credit for a better card.
Sorry if that's harsh, but I think anybody who has the income to justify a $495 card would get something better if they could.
Somebody on the review pages on Credit Karma said that the Black just gets standard Barclay phone reps - not what you'd expect for that fee. Their graphs also show a much different distribution of credit scores than what they show for AmEx Platinum and Chase Sapphire. As credit scores improve, the Black graph goes down and Chase and AmEx graphs go sharply upward.

I've read comments on another forum claiming that some people actually got approved for the Black with a $500 limit. Which leaves $5 after the annual fee. I don't know if that's really true, but it's pretty hilarious if it is, and what kind of person would agree to a deal like that. I guess the idea for that person is "Give us $495 and we'll get you laid for a year." ..which might not be a bad deal I guess.

Actually if it would get me laid for a year I'd give them the 495 right now. That's a whole lot cheaper than I'd be expecting to pay for that.

My luck would be it would get me the morbidly fat chicks, but hey, beggars can't be choosers I guess!

The new visa black is made out of stainless steel. Still trying to make itself look like the centurion (the original black), but it's really more to the level of Amex plat. Stainless steel or not, visa black still has nothing on Amex Platinum. This so called "black card" imitation made out of metal is a joke...
