Citi ThankYou vs ThankYou Preferred

Postby Midori » Tue Nov 19, 2013 10:52 am

Back in November/December 2012, I applied for an ordinary Citi ThankYou card, since I was looking for a plain-Jane starter card to establish a bit of history with. I've posted elsewhere about the cumbersomeness of their rewards program (short recap: not all cardholders of the same card get the same bonus categories; you have to call to find out what your personal bonus is), although with 5x gas, groceries, public transportation, parking, and drugstores, up to $2500, it's actually one of the most decent cards in the wallet this quarter.

I noticed on my statement that they had upgraded the card in October to a ThankYou Preferred (2x restaurants, entertainment). They had been sending out mailers (which I mostly ignored) which had been really pushing the ThankYou into dining and entertainment territory, but I was rather surprised to see that the ordinary Citi ThankYou is no longer on the website, and it seems to have been formally rolled over into the Citi ThankYou Preferred.

I'll be sorry if I'm losing those 5% categories, but they have such a range of cards, I'm not surprised that they're trying to consolidate and focus their cards a bit. I've been really using it a lot this quarter with so much household spend... I rather feel I'm being downgraded. :ppp

So you are losing your 5X categories and basically getting less for the upgrade is that what I'm reading? I just want to be sure. If that's true, not much of an upgrade so I can understand you feeling that way.

How odd... the thread originally posted as "Citi Thankyou -> Citi ThankYou Preferred." It looks like it's been manually changed to "vs", which doesn't quite make sense in the context.

...Yes. I'm losing a card with rotating 5% categories and 1%-all-else and getting downgraded to a 2% dining-and-entertainment 1%-all-else card. Which is odd, since the 2% card has the "Preferred" name, which implies a certain degree of superiority.

I called citi and changed my Platinum Select cart to Thankyou Preferred. After the change was successful, citi waited 45 days to send me a new card. When I called and asked about the waiting time, they said its standard practice.

Jumbo, I switched from Citi Diamond Preferred to the Thank You Card and it took about a month to get the card.
Seems odd that it should take that long.

That's beyond weird. But then it doesn't surprise me from a lender who declines you because you don't carry a balance on a revolver. I'm so glad Citi passed on me numerous times, they'll never get another hard pull out of me. Hell I wouldn't take their card if they PAID me now and that's no BS. I guess it's appropriate that I'm listening to Godsmack's "Keep Away" as I type! HA

After the ordeal I went through trying to verify my new address with Chiti bank... I sent a bank statement, copy of auto registration, copy of auto insurance, copy of car title, copy of most recent paystub all with my new address on them, and somehow that wasn't good enough to prove I lived there. Finally, told them to fudge off. I will never apply for a ChitiBank card again and recommend no one does as well.
