Barclaycard ending relationship with Virgin

Postby AaronMFisher » Thu Nov 07, 2013 9:48 pm

Hello everyone. This is my first post here so I will try to be as detailed as possible. I did some googling on the issue and ended up with nothing so I thought I would post here.

I currently have the Virgin America VISA that is operated through Barclaycard. The rewards are fantastic and the yearly fee is low. I receive a companion ticket discount once a year and I get points so quickly, the card has led to several coast to coast flights for free. It is my go to card, along with my AMEX Zync.

I received a letter today, as did some friends of mine, that the partnership between Virgin America and Barclaycard is ended and I will be automatically reissued a new card through Barclaycard. The yearly fee is almost doubling, the rewards are... well, they are absolutely terrible in comparison, and my card number is being changed. The rewards system will not go directly through Barclaycard and not Virgin America. Oh, and they are changing the card from a VISA to a MasterCard.

My question is, is this even legal? My yearly fee renewed in May but they are cutting off my card in January. I did not agree to this initially. Even when American Express discontinued my ZYNC card, they grandfathered me in and I can keep using it as long as I want. If this is legal or illegal, what can I do? I established a relationship with Barclaycard under the agreement that rewards would be transferred to Virgin America. I feel like I have been sold a bill of goods, I paid for one thing and now they are changing the rules halfway through.

Most card agreements usually say something like, "terms and conditions may change" and "the rewards may change" or some language similar to that. Being a Barclaycard customer myself, I know they are especially clear about giving themselves an "out" of the agreement... worse come to worse- they could always say they are closing your account(which they can do at anytime) and as a courtesy to you, they offered you a different product. So from a legal standpoint, you probably have little recourse.

From a customer standpoint, you are a dissatisfied customer and you can and should complain to them that you are unhappy with the new relatonship. If I were you, I'd look and see if there are any other Barclaycards which seemed attractive. I would call and request a product change to that product instead. You've been inconvenienced and they should make it up to you. A waived annual fee, lower APR, and/or CLI would be nice, too.

If they are not responsive, then they don't deserve your business. Virgin will surely be picked up by some other credit card company and you can move your business elsewhere.

Agree with what otter said. It's legal, though the result for you sucks. But it's legal.

Honestly that's one of the reasons I tend to go for cards with more general purpose rewards than rewards that are tied to a specific airline or auto make or the like. Business partnerships can change at any time.

Remember Star Wars? The credit card companies are Darth Vader:

"I have altered the deal; pray I do not alter it further."

Besides it's pretty hard to find a virgin these days

By the way as a lawyer, that would be the time for you to show him the legal terms of what he agreed to, and threaten to initiate litigation against him if he fails to comply. We'd miss you, but that's really your job...

A $ 90 annual fee for World Elite MC is not bad....

I might have to get one since my CSP World MC will be going to Visa soon.

I really like the shinny chrome MC logo.....
