Can You Switch Chase Credit Cards?

Postby Techno4K » Sun Nov 03, 2013 3:51 pm

Hello everyone. I have a question.

I want to get a Chase Sapphire Preferred ("CSP") card. I currently have a Chase Freedom Visa Signature with a CL of 15K and a Chase Slate card with a CL of 9K.

I want to know how to best proceed. Can I just call up Chase and ask them to convert my Chase slate to a CSP, or do I have to sign up for a new card, which obviously will

decrease my FICO due to an hard inquiry and a decrease in average account age due to a new account.

And if I cannot switch, do you think they will approve me for a 3rd Chase CC? I really have no use for my Slate card, so should I close it before signing for a CSP? And

before I close it, should I call to allocate my CL to the Chase Freedom?

I am really sorry for all these questions. I have been reading a lot, and I know you guys know a lot about this than I do. Thanks!

depends on what you want.

you may be able to product change the slate into chase sapphire preferred but the freedom probably would have a better chance. don't ask me why, however, you can ask for the slate first before freedom.

if you do this, you won't be able to qualify for the reason everyone seems to want CSP. the bonus.

if I were you I would apply in branch versus online if you want that bonus, because in branch the app will only require you to spend 2k to get the 40k pts, but online its 3k. that's a difference of spending about 667 a month to 1k a month just to get the bonus.

you can have 3 cc with chase, sounds like you're worried about your score taking a hit, don't worry, as long as you don't apply for cc left and right it won't last too long.

if it was me, I would apply for the chase sapphire preferred, afterwards I would ask if we can close the slate since it doesn't do that, to see if they can apply that CL over to sapphire upping' the CL.

If you don't are about the points see if you can get a product change of slate to chase sapphire preferred, I know slate can go to freedom and freedom can go to chase sapphire preferred (as long as there is no funny business like it was another card that got converted to slate, the system then probably makes it a bit difficult cos the rep telling you whether they can PC is based on the drop down menu)

so if they can't do slate to CSP, maybe get your freedom to CSP and slate to Freedom and move the CL around if needed

Techno- I believe that you are going to have to apply for it and if you get approved, you can ask them to move over the CL for you. Because from what I have seen, they probably won't do a product change to the CSP since you have a slate. If you had the Freedom, perhaps they might, but I have never seen it been done with a Slate before.

You might be able to convert it but I'd probably apply for it to get the sign-up bonus.

Thank you guys. I didn't know that converting an account doesn't get the sign on bonus. That's good to know! I will also open it at a branch so I will only have to spend 2k instead of 3k. I am very glad I asked this question to you knowledgeable folks here.

My last question is: If I successfully opened a CSP, and I reallocate all of my CL on the Slate to the CSP and then close the Slate, will the new $0 credit limit hurt my credit score? Thanks. I just wanna make sure that I am not making any error.
