Review of The Duck Card Visa from OCCU

Postby MemberSince99 » Mon Oct 28, 2013 9:58 am

OCCU (Oregon Community Credit Union) is offering a card that while not pretty to look at by most standards, seems to give nice starting limits. They also offer a Beaver card, again not much of a looker but if the limit is right who cares. Just google "duck card" and the first links that come up are about it.

I had read many on the FICO forum saying they got big starting limits this way. The consensus seems to be if your credit is decent to very good and your util is low and no recent derogs, you may end up with a very nice limit. Just don't have gone nuts on the recent new cards and inquiries (though they don't seem ultar sensitive like say Citi) as one guy got declined for those reasons but he had like 5 or 6 new accounts.

Worth a look I was surprised to see no one here seemed to know about this card and there were no posts about it. Maybe you guys got sickened by "garden" insanity on that forum but always remember the garden fanatics didn't get 25 cards by living in the garden.

Truth is, from what I'm seeing, this is the best time to get cards and CLIs that we've had in years. I say get in while the getting is good, because in a year it could be like 2008 again, we just don't know.

We are still kind of stuck in "2008" though to be more accurate it was 2007 in my books

I don't think it will ever get back to the days of where people can get credit limits in the six figures, credit card limits not heloc or charge cards

People with 100-200k gross annual salary would get anywhere from 20k to 30k CL with cards like united and CSP (if you thought 5k was little..) and they generally have great to excellent credit scores.

Honestly a super high credit line doesn't really matter to me because it doesn't fit my lifestyle needs, occasionally I like to take trips..locally and internationally..but if I do i curb other purchases and will be mindful of my eating out habits (biggest indulgence when you add up, friends know I have hibernation modes).

Plus I tend to try to hunt for the best deals, like with my trip to venice/florence/paris earlier this year--all of it, airfare (direct and was less then 12 hrs) plus hotels (right on canal and French quarters) cost less then 2k.

Nyc is one of my fave places, during January/feb they have really good airfare deals.

I much rather save money by getting best deals I can, and the cashback I earn is a bonus on top of it.

It's nice to have a high credit limit but if you don't really need it why tempt yourself? At least for me, I don't want to :ppp

Maybe if I made a lot more i would like a CL above 20,25k

Not really a matter of needing the limits for me. High limits allow me to keep utilization under 10% without micromanaging.

Bingo. That's why I called Chase last Friday, to ask when they would post to the credit bureaus to know if I had time to make my rent/car payment now or I had to wait. Combined, both would push my utilization on the CSP higher than I'd like. If I had a higher limit, it wouldn't be a big deal. That's what I explained when the analyst asked why I wanted a CLI. It's not that I NEED it, but that it will allow me the luxury to not worry about balances posting. I probably would anyway to be honest, but at least if they did my score wouldn't dive for that month.

So you actually want a limit higher than you really need, AS LONG AS you are disciplined. If not, then I agree, don't do it.

David, lol grass is always greener!

Houses here can sell for millions, 1-10mil, nyc I saw some in 50 mil for five bedroom five bath

Takeshi, 2k is 10% of utilization.. But I don't mind going up to 30%. 10 is ideal, 20-30 is still okay

Two things I've seen so far with this - first I can't set any alerts up. Every time I've tried (and I've been trying for 2 days) I get a "system error" from the site.

Second I can't log in using the IPhone app. I use the same info I use on the web site which works there and it always says username or password not found.

So, seems there may be a few glitches with things. I emailed them to let them know hopefully they can get them corrected.

I heard back today - got an email saying an answer was in the secure correspondence under my account.

What that said was something to the effect of "We are sorry we are unable to process your request at this time. Please call customer service at XXX-XXX-XXXX".

Yep, not looking too good there I guess. So I tried to set an alert and still got "System Error 100" whatever that is. Oh well.

I am a lurker on MyFico and cannot post...but I have been seeing them go nuts lately with the Duck card. It appears that you do not have to join the CU in order to apply.

I think the main reason MyFico people go nuts for products like this is because a lot of the people there are in rebuilding mode, so a lender known to give high credit lines to people who would normally not get as a limit from Chase, BofA et al tends to not go unnoticed there. And one of the main reasons, like MemberSince99 said is for utilization. Every 6 months or so MyFico goes crazy for something..a few years ago everyone wanted to join PSECU because of the free Fico score and the split Visa card/LOC product (another lender known for high limits); in 2011 everybody was going crazy for the Zync etc etc.

When I first saw people posting about the Duck Card I thought those guys from Duck Dynasty had their own Visa....
