Narrowing My Choices - Question on Application Strategy

Postby Wildcat_1 » Mon Jul 29, 2013 5:19 pm

Hi all

Not sure where to post this as it straddles two providers. I am narrowing my choices down and believe I want to focus on:

AMEX Blue Cash Preferred
Chase Sapphire Preferred
AMEX Gold Premier Rewards or AMEX Platinum

This will add a total of 3 cards to the wallet but based on usage should cover the profile quite nicely.

I am still in two minds on the Plat, love the perks but if only it had the gold rewards this is almost leading me to sign up for both, crazy I know :) AMEX if you are listening how about gold reward and plat perks on one plat card ?

So my questions are:

1) Based on the above and no affiliation currently with either provider what should the strategy be on application. Apply for all on one day, space it out, do Chase then AMEX etc ?

2) With regards to the 25k points on Gold and Plat I was reading that this has been the lowest sign up to date, any idea when these public sign up offers may change ?

3) With regards to BCP if my wife signs up for her own card would that effectively allow you the 6% on $6k groceries each, i.e. up to $12k total but of course on separate accounts ?

Thanks all

WC

1) There are several ways to do this. Without knowing your credit score, average age of accounts, income, current inquiries, etc, I'm just going to assume it's good enough to get these cards, so I would go ahead and go for all of them on the same day. Regarding Amex, I would go for the charge card you choose first, because if you get denied for it, you'll be denied for BCP for sure, so that'd save you a wasted inquiry. If you're confident you'll be approved, the app order doesn't really matter.

2) Search online periodically, perhaps?

3) If she signs up for her own card, not an authorized user on your account, then yes, that's correct.

I have some time to kill tonight so I'll try to help with the ones I know the answers to.

Some questions about AMEX Platinum
1) Can you still get immediate Starwood Elite/Gold Status ? Yes

2) Can you still get Avis, National, Hertz Elite/Gold Status ? Yes

3) I read that a lot of the perks are diminishing, can anyone state what has been removed and more importantly if anything is being added ?
They lost their perks with an airline I never fly, can't remember the name of it. I'm sure someone else here can help me out answering this one.
4) As am a corporate green card customer (given to me by work) can I still qualify for the bonuses when I sign up for a Plat card etc ?
For a personal Plat, yes.
Some questions about Visa/MC
1) Is there a better option with Chase Sapphire Preferred, Visa or MC for perks, rewards etc ? Visa has better purchase protection.

2) Are the Sapphire Preferred cards Visa Signature by default when opting for Visa ? Yes 5K is minimum credit limit given out on this card.

3) Is there a list of hotels/travel partners/department stores that are eligible for these cards ? What do you mean?

General Questions on AMEX & Chase
There are a lot of details about the stated benefits (reviews, card company websites) but my question is are you (those that have these cards) actually seeing these benefits ? I wouldn't be paying the annual fees or using these cards if I wasn't.

1) For example companion tickets sound great but with so much fine print are they a reality ? Only for first/business class. Still expensive because you have to pay the taxes and fees but if you can book in advance enough to use it, yeah it's legit.

Hotel room upgrades, do these actually happen at check in and for most of the time or are you finding this happens once in a blue moon and most of the time they are 'unavailable' ? It has worked most of the time for me so far, I try to use SPG hotels. Last time I used my CSP at a non-SPG hotel and got a room upgrade, although I have no idea why.

Concierge services do these add any value, are they coming through for you with pre-sales access or some other requests or more often than not are you finding better deals yourself? It just depends, there are a lot of variables. Hit or miss kind of thing. I wouldn't look at it as trying to get better deals, rather, it's more of a convenience thing.

Travel & Hotel services booked through provider a good deal or cheaper elsewhere ? Sometimes cheaper, sometimes not.

2) If I want to apple for both BCP and AMEX Plat (not sure the initial for that ) what should I apply for first and how long should I leave it between them ? Answer in first reply.

3) Lastly, is there a better time to sign up or a better time to get a bonus (holidays, start or end of year etc) ? Being patient and watching offers is really it. 25K MR points seems pretty standard for charge cards right now, from what I've seen.

Thanks so much Robr. A couple of follow up questions if I may

With regards to my applications, if I wait for a better sign up on Gold or Plat is it still advisable to apply for Chase & Amex BCP now or should I get the heavy hitters first ?

Second, with regards to the business/first class companion and hotel upgrade perks are there any tried and trusted tips to ensure these happen more often than not ?

Lastly, per one of my other posts, any experience with the preferred seating/pre-sales for concerts and whether that works well or not ?

Thanks

WC

The Chase and Amex BCP are actually a little harder to get than an Amex Gold or Plat, so you could get those first and wait on a better charge card signup bonus.

From what I understand regarding the companion ticket, the more in advance you book it the better your odds are, but that's about it method wise. Hotel upgrades, I'm not sure.

Regarding the preferred seating/pre-sale tickets: I myself have never used this yet, although I'll be giving it a shot through Platinum concierge for Muse tickets soon, so we'll see. As far as what I've read through the forums over time, there seems to be mixed results with this benefit. I don't think it can be generalized into always working or not, I think it just varies.

There really isn't a one-size-fits-all answer for these sorts of questions. I knew I wanted the MileagePlus Explorer most so I applied for it. Next on my list was the BCP so I applied for it the same day. Next day figured I might as well give the CSP a shot and applied for it as well. Got all 3 but my credit and your credit probably aren't the same.

There really won't be much benefit in spacing them out unless by "space" you mean 6 months to a year to let the impact of the inquiries taper off a bit.
