This business model never made much sense to me. What's the point in having cards for people with poor and excellent credit history but nothing in the middle? It means they have to go somewhere in-between.

The business model assumption is that the people in the middle aren't worth having as customers. There's logic there; they're good enough credit risks there is competition for them, they won't pay silly fees and fines, and they don't spend enough to generate lots of swipe fee revenue. There's probably also the assumption that most people won't move out of the bottom bracket once they get there.

Capital One is pretty profitable, so it might not be that crazy.
