Using American credt cards in England

Postby gold-rick » Tue Apr 23, 2013 11:20 pm

Hey guys -

I am going to visiting a good friend in England in the upcoming month and staying with him for about 1 month.

Will my Chase Sapphire work in pretty much all the stores? Has anyone used this credit card in England?

yep. you'll be covered 99% of the time. it'll work in any store or restaurant since it is a VISA card. businesses in busy cities like London keep magnetic card readers around for tourists from the US. not sure about small towns.

but you will want to carry around some cash because in some cases only chip and pin cards will work, a few such case being unattended ticket dispensing machines and gas stations. but since you will have a friend with you who is a local with you there it shouldn't be a problem.
Junk I use:
AmEx Platinum for Mercedes Benz from, 75k spending ability
AmEx Everyday 8.99% + Prime, 44k CL
Chase Ink Bold, 35k
Chase Freedom (Converted from WaMu VISA) from '07, 5.99% + Prime, 30k CL

Junk I don't use
BoA Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards (converted from World Points MC) from '07, 7.9% Fixed APR, 30k CL
Discover IT (Converted from Discover More) from '08, 5.74% + Prime, 20k CL
AmEx Clear from '07, 4.99% + Prime, 10k CL
All 3 credit scores are over 800.

Pretty much everywhere (Apart from unattended kisosk) it will work. Visa, MasterCard and American Express (Apart from some small merchants) are accepted. Every shop either has a magstripe reader on the top or the side of the chip and pin machine or the cashier can swipe it through on their screen. Some also have to be dipped in the chip and pin machine then pulled out for it to read it (Like a Pay@pump but vertical instead).

You will likely be asked for ID most of the time. If your Chase card is contactless, you can use it for purchases up to £20 at most retailers without signing.
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)
