Why was the Citi Forward discontinued?

Why was the Citi Forward discontinued?

Postby swipe_masta » Tue Feb 19, 2013 5:29 pm

I was late for the party and didn't get to apply for the Citi Forward. I did have some questions tho:

1) What happens if you already have a forward card? Are you grandfathered in?
2) The student card is a joke! In the terms and conditions page, it states that the 5 pts you would get for books, music, restaurants, etc is just a "promotional offer". How long does this promo last?
3)WHY WHY WHY DID CITI GET RID OF THIS CARD???

Thanks guys.

I don't see it being offered anymore either. There was lots of people complaining about it on the MyFico forums.

I just product changed to this card in September. If they stop giving me 5 points for certain catagories, I'll just use the card for $1-$2 purchases once every six months.
My Limits:
NFCU NavCheck: $15,000/NFCU Platinum: $11,500/NFCU nRewards: $8,000
Chase Freedom: $6,500/Chase Slate: $6,000/CSP: $5,000/Marriott Rewards Primier: $5,000/United MileagePlus Explorer: $5,000/Southwest Primier: $3,000
Citi Hilton HHonors: $9,700/Citi Simplicity: $8,200/Citi Forward: $5,500
AMEX Blue Cash Everyday: $8,000/SPG AMEX: $5,000/AMEX Everyday: $5,000/AMEX Delta Skymiles Platinum: $3,400
Discover IT: $7,700
Barclay's NFL Extra Points (Carolina Panthers): $5,000
DCU Platinum: $3,000
RTN FCU CC: $2,000

Current total limit: $129,500

1) Yes, for the time being a Forward cardholder gets to keep the card as is. Banks discontinue programs or cards for new cardholders all the time. Eventually, yes, they can and do go away completely. For instance, Citibank used to offer the Driver's Edge card (a GM card for any make new or used basically) and they stopped offering it years ago; however, they allowed the existing cardholders to use the card and rewards up until March of 2012 (I believe).
2) Supposedly even the normal card has a "promotional" 5 points on bookstores etc. This "promotion" has lasted years as far as I know. They probably use promotional as a way of being able to discontinue the bonus at any time.
3) Maybe it is not gone yet, jut being redesigned. The top level Thank You card (Thank You Prestige) went away and now there is a new card called Citibank Prestige...basically the old card redeux. It could also be that too many people found out that they got 5 Thank You points on Amazon and it was no longer worth it to them to offer the card to new cardholders but lucrative enough to keep it for existing customers.

Mine still gets the 5x points rewards and yes, they're not marketing it to non-students anymore, but apparently you can apply through the student page, select no when it asks if you're a student if you're not one, and get the card regardless. You can still get to the application here (this is the link they emailed me for referring others, full disclosure)

A 1% card with up to 1200 annual bonus points? What a joke.

Yup, the fact that it says points rather than point implies its more than a 1% card (in those categories). It could be foreshadowing a change, it could be a different marketing banner that summarizes different things. As of the last statement, Im still getting 5x points.

Just an FYI: there is no way you can opt out of saying you're not a student. Just checked out the application myself and it has a section that asks what state, city, school all with asterisks (have to answer). There is no box you can click on or anywhere that says anything about not being a student...

^Seems they closed that loophole then, sorry for that piece of outdated information. The email they sent me today encouraging me to refer other students ($50 per person approved) did still explicitly mention 5x points at restaurants, fast food, book stores, record stores, and entertainment venues.

I wonder if amusement parks and laser tag places count as entertainment venues.
