Can you convert from Freedom to Sapphire Preferred?

Postby MrMosby » Mon Dec 10, 2012 11:59 am

Can you convert a Chase Freedom to a Chase Sapphire Preferred card, and if you do is there a credit check involved (I'm in the process of buying/selling a home so I don't want any unneeded inquiries).

Each person's account is eligible for different upgrades. In general I do not think the one you mentioned is common but I would not say impossible.

Agreed. Most people end up keeping the Freedom while applying for the CSP because of the extra perks (point transfers between accounts, earn points faster etc.). I'm not 100% sure but it's also likely that if you still wanted to convert instead of just applying for a new account then you'd be ineligible for signup bonus offer.

You should call Chase and give it a good second thought before making a decision.

I am 99.9% sure the signup bonuses are for new applications only. What you might do is be able to transfer most of your Freedom CL to the CSP as either part of a recon, or if you get accepted.

But as Endoas said, you get the most benefits from having and using both.

You cannot (at least this is what several reps told me). My dad had a Chase Slate card that was useless to him given the lack of rewards, so I tried to have that converted to a Chase Sapphire or Chase Sapphire Preferred card and they told me the only card that was eligible for it to be converted to was a Chase Freedom and that a Chase Freedom can only be converted to a Slate.

FYI, the Chase Slate was a Mastercard so maybe the rules are different for converting a Freedom Mastercard than they are a Freedom Visa (although it shouldn't be the case since Chase Sapphire also comes as a Mastercard). I was told definitively though that Freedom and Sapphire are an entirely different set of cards and that there was absolutely no way to convert one to another

it depends if you have the chase blueprint , a chase checking account , savings account then you can upgrade, but if you only have a chase freedom no you can't upgrade to the sapphire there different types of cards. or go from the sapphire to the freedom. unless you have multipale accounts with them.
