How to get security deposit back from Merrick Bank

Postby shoptalk01 » Mon Oct 08, 2012 7:54 am

A few weeks ago I applied for a secured account with Merrick Bank, I sent a $300 security deposit via Money Gram, as my bank does not allow for sending payments from my checking account I had to draw out cash and send it that way. Later I receive a letter explaining that they are unable to extend credit to me as they are unable to verify my address and also my phone number I gave them does not match my address.

Long story short, they want a copy of my driver's license but I just moved here so the address on my license isn't correct, also what I have is a weird address so looking at it, it just doesn't look correct but it is. In fact I tried to place an order for some stuff I needed and the company had problems sending it because their system wouldn't let them print my address on the label.

Now Merrick Bank says there is nothing further they can do since I don't have the correct address on my driver's license and my only phone is prepaid so there is no bill. I'm only here for maybe 3 to 6 months and don't want to keep changing information, so they said their only choice was to cancel my application and my $300 deposit would be refunded in 3 to 4 weeks.

Now this has me wondering, how do I get my money back from them? Since they were unable to verify my address and send a credit card there how would they be able to send a check there? Just please don't send advise on anything other than how to get my money back, I already decided a long time ago I no longer wanted the card due to so many people telling me it was a bad idea. Just FYI they never said how the money would be refunded just that I would be getting my $300 back.

I now have a secured Visa card with US Bank and want to use the $300 to increase my credit limit with them. I also have a secured card with Capital One so should be set fairly well for the next 6 months or so.

I would consider getting a PO Box. They probably won't use it as the address for your card but they should be able to send the check there. You also could ask if you can send a self addressed envelope. That way you know the address will be correct. They shouldn't have any problems with either, unless they just want to be jerks.

I went and got a box at the UPS Store, It's like a post office box with a real street address and it works great to receive packages from Fed Ex and UPS and fantastic when the package requires a signature. I already tried it on a couple of credit card applications and both were rejected. No way possible to verify the address was mine.

What gets me is they can send a letter (snail mail) to the address I provided but they can't verify the address to open the credit card account. Then they just said they would be sending back my deposit but didn't say how. What a joke.
