When does Chase increase your credit limit?

Postby American » Sat Aug 18, 2012 8:16 pm

(Updated for 2013) I'm so sick of this $500 limit. I've probably paid it off 10 times in the last 3 months.

Do they auto-raise it after 3 or 6 months?

It depends on how much you spend for that month, so looking at your last 3 months assuming you are purchasing items or going out to dinner lunch and your purchases are around 400.00 or more and you're paying your bill in full, they should raise your credit limit .

But if you are only using card for total purchases of around 200, this might not raise your limit.

The best method is to open a new Chase card and then transfer a chunk of the limit over to your other card. That way you may get a bonus and credit limits on new accounts seem to be higher than what is given during credit limit requests.

With my Discover card I don't remember what my credit limit use to be, but when me and my cousin went on a cruise a few years ago I charged over a thousand, paid my bill in full, and now I have a 5,500 limit.

You've only had this card about 3 months, Give it some time and continue to use it and pay in full, then around November see if you get a higher credit limit. If you don't let us know so we can try and figure this problem out. They may see that you are 2 aggressive for 3 months in a row always charging the minimum, this might be the reason you are stuck at 500.00.

What you might think about doing for the next 3 months, use the card 1 month spend around 500.00, the second month around 300.00, final month spend around 200.00, and see if there's some changes.

If after this your still only given a 500.00 limit, use your card 1 month and spend around 350.00. pay in full if there's no changes after this. Then I would call an account mgr explain the situation tell them you want a higher limit.

Opened my Freedom 11/2010 with $7K limit. 9 Months later 8/11 they bumped me up to $10K and it has not moved since.

My Slate has not had a credit line increase since I requested one in 9/07. I rarely use the card.

I'd give it 6-9 months (from open date) and you should receive an increase; though probably one you won't be doing carthweels over. I have not heard people talking about Chase auto CLI's much anymore. It seems that they give you a training wheel credit line at first to see how you handle it and then give one auto CLI within the first year and then it stops. Because of CARD Act banks have to have updated income info; so since your account is new they can use the income info provided on the application for the first CLI. Any subsequent increases will require you to apply and provide updated income info. And it will cost an inquiry (but if you get the CLI it was worth the inquiry-people focus way too much on inquiries).

With CHASE more than likely you will have to ask. just give it few more months, if its not auto, call them.

Just for reference. I've had my Chase Amazon Visa for 1 year and 1 month and have NOT received an auto increase. I keep my utilization just around 30% each month. I pay in full each month as well. Never missed a payment.

One of the easiest ways to increase your credit limit is to open up another Chase card and then transfer part of the credit line to your other card with them. You probably will have better luck getting a high CL that way then you will if you ask for a credit limit increase on an existing account (and that will still require a hard pull so you might as well get a new card instead).

Do they auto-raise it after 3 or 6 months?

(Probably a little late of a reply but just in case anyone is reading this)

I can say, 100% they do. I got an Auto increase from $5,000 to $7,500 after three months. I'm sure some stuff plays a factor such as utilization and all that good stuff. But at the time I had a balance of I think close to a thousand (that I did NOT pay off right away, I was making monthly payments of twice the minimum or more) and still got an increase. Had the card since March of 2013 and got the increase in June.

As of today though, I have a balance of $5,100 and have not got an auto increase since. So I can't say if they do it periodically. They may, but you might have to have a low balance.

I'll be applying for an increase the same day as I apply for the 3X on my AmEx BCP (hoping to transfer the debt from Chase to Amex to keep the utilization under 30%)

I'll post the results so people can compare their situation to mine and better determine what they could be eligible for.

But yeah, You should have no problem getting that Auto CLI.
