Convert Chase Slate to Freedom

Postby jumbo » Fri Jul 13, 2012 2:36 pm

I got Chase Slate on November of 2011 with 3K limit.
I am planning to change the Chase Slate to Freedom, do you guys think it's a good idea.

I have $2800 balance due on my Chase Slate card, that I used to pay my college dues. My intro apr is 0% until mid 2013, so I have not paid any interest on the card yet. I always pay little more than the minimum amount, as soon as the statement comes. So, I have never been late in any payment.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Keep the Slate and open a new, separate Freedom account. You can have more than one account. Use the Slate to finance things you can't pay off every month as it should have a lower APR than Freedom. Pay the Freedom off every month.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

You can do one of two things: Like Jeffysdad said, you could just open a separate Freedom card and take advantage of the sign up bonuses...

Or, if you are not looking to add new credit (probably smart) then absolutely change to Freedom. Slate is a worthless card and I HATE that verticle design. When I emailed them a few weeks ago about my Slate's APR they offered to change it to a Freedom...I already have a Freedom so I am not sure. Maybe I will ask them to change it to Sapphire....

The only thing is I wouldn't put too much stake in them opening a new credit account when you have one account that's maxed out with them, but I could be wrong.

I changed my Slate to a Freedom maybe a month ago. I did it all through emailing Chase through their website. My credit limit and APR didn't change, and since both were Visa cards, the account number didn't change either. As long as you don't request a credit limit increase at the same time, it will NOT be a hard pull. Chase still reports to the credit bureaus as the same account, so it won't lessen your average age of accounts. The only thing i am not 100% sure about is whether your 0% apr will stay the same, because I was already past my 15 month period on Slate when I PC'ed.

I say go for a conversion. Slate is a useless card unless you got it strictly for a balance transfer, where Freedom has at minimum 1% rewards on all purchases. And like CC Deville said, the vertical design is horrible, unlike the appealing designs of the Freedom and Sapphire.

I'm not fond of vertical design as well. As for applying the new card, I am stopping myself from doing it. Thinking of applying for AMEX Blue Cash in a few months, so I don't want hard pull in my report now. My was last pull was on April for a Banana Republic visa, was stupid and fell for 30% discount.. :)

good point about the 0%, I think I will call chase rather than the email and clarify about the current apr.
Thanks a lot for the great info.

Update:
I called the Chase credit card department, and talked with a lady, and first she asked me, is it because of the rewards that I want to convert slate to freedom, and I answered 'Yes'. And then, she told that this Slate Card is Not Eligible for conversion into any card that chase offers. And when I asked the reason, she just replied, "It just says here, it's not eligible, so I cannot change it into freedom".

Is this normal? or Well I guess, I'm not lucky enough at this time.

That is weird I remember reading a few posts on this forum of people saying they got there slate converted to freedom. and Hematino said he got his changed last month.

I would call back at a different time and try again with someone else because apparently all she is doing is really from some instruction book

I had a slate card that was not used for over a year and I called them and said I have 3 cashback cards I have no reason to use your card and the lady said are you more interested in miles or cash back. I said cash back and she said ok we will upgrade you to a freedom card!
