2nd Update:
Called Chase customer support again. An Indian lady answered the phone this time, and said the same sentence "your slate is not eligible for any product change this time".

And when I asked for a reason, and the date when will it be eligible, again the same answer "not eligible for product change".

So, I guess no Freedom for me now.

don't use the card and call every 6 months and they will finally give in, they said the same thing to me for 2 years no upgrade but when they saw the card not used for over a year they caved.

Jumbo the reason is 1 card is a low interest card and the other is a cashback card with rewards.

just like I couldn't change my green card to a clear card because there 2 different cards 1 is a low interest card and the other is a travel card.

I just PCed tonight. I have a Slate at a ZERO balance and what I did was email them through their website saying that I'm thinking of closing my account, but first wanted to know if I was eligible for a PC. They responded saying that they can change me to a Freedom. I never had intentions of really closing the account, but wanted to see what my options were first.

Maybe you should try what I did Jumbo.

First post here - howdy all.

I recently called up Chase and had no problem converting my Slate into Freedom. I was expecting a lot of groaning (or at least an attempt to sell me on keeping Slate and applying for Freedom) but it turned out to be pretty simple.

I converted. My number stayed the same and the chase online banking site reflected the change almost immediately.

Zombie revival..

To the OP, did you ever get your Slate converted to a Freedom? I heard that if your Slate was an old WaMu card, it is impossible to convert...

Yes, I was able to convert my Slate to Freedom.
I had approved for a Freedom card before the conversion. So, now I had TWO Freedom visa.
I did not use the recently converted Freedom for a month and had Zero balance.

I talked with a CSR today and was able to combine the credit limit of both freedom cards into one. And luckily I closed the freedom card with 17% APR and added credit limit to the freedom card that had 0% intro apr till 2014.
So, now I have a Freedom card with 5K limit, and Zero apr till 2014.
