How to choose Visa or Mastercard on the Sapphire?

Postby nbminister » Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:16 pm

I want to know how to choose Chase Sapphire Visa or Mastercard? I did not find there is an option of Mastercard or Visa on the application form.

If you apply through the Chase website, the Sapphire will always be a Visa. For whatever reason, any card Chase offers that has both versions seems to be much more heavily promoted as a Visa through Chase themselves. Also most of the offers you see on third-party websites will link to the Visa application without making clear which version you are actually applying for. If you definitely want the Mastercard version of a Chase card such as Sapphire or Freedom, simply go to Mastercard's website and apply for the card that way. I have the World Elite Mastercard version of the Sapphire Preferred, and that's how I got mine.

This may be a silly question, but is there really any kind of direct benefit of getting a Mastercard instead of a Visa? Just trying to figure out why someone would specifically want one over the other.

It's kind of a fine line, the benefits are really similar. Maybe this will help:

Visa Signature Visa Signature Card and Reward Cards | Visa USA | Personal | Visa USA
World Elite Mastercard World Elite MasterCard Credit Cards | MasterCard®

I think the benefits for the World Elite Mastercard slightly top Visa Signature. For example if you travel abroad to certain countries (like Ireland or Jamaica) and rent a car, Visa Signature will not cover any kind of insurance, where World Elite Mastercard has no exceptions for the countries. Supposedly anyways. I haven't traveled abroad in a couple years so I really couldn't tell you from experience.

Plus the reflective silver Mastercard logo on the Chase Sapphire Preferred looks way cooler than the word "Signature" under where it says Visa. Lol.

Well, I can't argue with that lol. Do the current versions of the card have the payment logo on the front or the back? My fiance's dad has the old version of the Sapphire with the Visa logo and raised numbers on the front, and I have to say the new version of the card looks so much cooler.

I got my CSP in May. It has only "Chase Sapphire Preferred" and my name on the front and is not really raised like most cards. The mag strip, Mastercard logo, account number, and my name again are all on the back. The card is made of metal (looks like steel) and it feels pretty heavy. Not everyone thinks so, but I think it's a damned nice looking card. Let me see if I can post a pic.

Here's what my card looks like. Sorry for the glare.

Edit-- Wow they appeared really small for some reason, I'm not sure how to blow it up, but if you click it you should be able to get a better view.

Man that's so sweet. I can't wait until I get my hands on one of those babies. I think you've officially just convinced me to go with the Mastercard version.

I hope you get it, that would be awesome. The Mastercard version is promoted a lot less and as a result not nearly as many CSP holders have it. LOL one funny thing is the cafeteria at my work has to push a button to select what type of card is being used before they slide it. Without fail, every time they look at my Sapphire like it came from Mars and scrutinize the front and back and they ask "What kind of card is this??" I guess because the metallic Mastercard logo isn't really common. Been using the Freedom down there lately though since the 5% restaurant quarter began, and the cafeteria somehow qualifies (obviously Chase hasn't sampled their food before calling them a "restaurant").
