3 Questions About The Citi Forward Rewards Program

Postby Jooxi » Thu Jul 05, 2012 10:37 am

I was wondering if anyone can help answer some questions I have about the Citi Forward card. I seem to be finding conflicting information for some questions, and calling the application line yields very little info.

1. What is the difference, exactly, between the Student and regular editions of this card? Other than the sign up bonus, is anything different?

2. How many points do you need to get, for example, a $50 gift card? I have heard some say it is 5000, but others say when they log into the ThankYou site they need to give 6000.

3. The perennial favorite: Do Amazon.com purchases still qualify for the 5 points per dollar as of this writing? Any indications this will go away?

I really appreciate any information you may have, I can't seem to get straight answers to these questions.

Under the Thank You rewards program, partner gift cards can be redeemed at a straight 1% point value. Example: $50 Best Buy gift card costs 5000 points. However, if you're looking at a cash equivalent gift card such as a Visa gift card, the point value will be less.

But is it 1:1 in gift cards for the Citi Forward specifically? I've read a comment that it's 1:1 for citi cards with an annual fee, like the platinum and preferred cards. But for the Forward, a "basic" card, when you log into the ThankYou site, you see $50 gift cards for 6,000 points.

Can you verify that, or was it just someone's random experience? Maybe it used to be more points, and now it is truly 1:1?

I truly appreciate any info you can give! Also, any information anyone has on the other 2 questions is appreciated as well.

Theres actually many reviews for the Citi Forward that you can find. I read up on it at plasticiq.com before applying for it.

Question 1
There is no difference between the Citi Forward Student and Citi Forward (standard?) when it comes to reward points and the benefits of the card itself. Only difference is as you stated the signup bonus and you also get an offer to BT without interest for 12months.

Question 2
As the previous poster stated. Citi Banks partners you can redeem your points at a 1:1 value but the rest (which is most) are not a true 1:1. Like chilis $25 giftcard is -3500 points but once you hit $100 gift its worth 10,000 points where it becomes a 1:1. But its not a true 1:1 value. Your best value for redeeming the Citi Forward thank you points would be through flights since you get a .01 cent per point value which is 1:1. Either that or using the points to pay your student loans which also become a true 1:1 value for your points.

Question 3
As of now yes Citi is still counting amazon as a bookstore and you still receive 5 points/ dollar spent. my last amazon purchase was made a month ago (yes i know it isnt now) and the points were added to my recent statement.

Hope all this helps! what is your reasoning for getting the Citi Forward Card if i may ask? and if your debating between the Student and the Normal Card, i would just hop on the Normal card and try to get the bonus points, if they deny you, you can always call into recon and ask for the student one with a low credit limit.
Wells Fargo Student Credit Card Visa - $1300 (February 2011)
American Express Zync Charge Card (February 2012)
Chase Freedom Visa- $2000 5% rotating (April 2012)
Citi Forward Visa- $3000 - 5x at restaurants, amazon.com (April 2012)
Chase Sapphire Preferred Mastercard World Elite - $5000 (July 2012)

Credit cards left to attain

Thank you for the detailed answers!

I've seen a lot of reviews online, which is why I why I'm asking these things. Usually at the bottom there's a comments section, and on of them, someone wrote that his Citi Forward card was asking for 6,000 points for a $50 gift card. He said this was only apparent once he signed in to the site - before he signed in, it showed 5,00 points for the $50 gift card.

But, perhaps it gets 1:1, as you mention, at the $100 level.

Is there a list of Citibank partners somewhere? I'd like to see where I can get gift cards at 1:1 before $100, as you mention.

To answer your question, I use Amazon a lot, and order restaurant/fast food fairly regularly, so the Citi Forward seems like a good fit for me at this point.
