Questions regarding the Citi TY Premier

Postby nbminister » Sat Jun 23, 2012 7:04 pm

I have two questions regarding the ThankYou Premier:

1. Is this card a visa or mastercard or both?
2. Is this card a EMV smart chip card?

1. It is a Visa Signature (directly from their website; when you click the Apply Now button the application loads and there is a Visa logo with a radio button filled in-there is no option for a MasterCard). Only the Thank You Prestige is a Master Card (World Elite). All other Thank You cards applied for on Citicards.com are Visa's.

2. It does not come standard with EMV. The Thank You Prestige World Elite MasterCard now comes standard with EMV. I have seen other people with Thank You Preferred and Premier MasterCards (not Visa) with EMV. Citi will issue EMV (they call it global chip technology) on certain cards if you know how to ask for it. It is my undertanding that only certain MasterCards (AAvantage, Dividend, Cash Returns and Thank You) are avaialble with the EMV. The only Visa's that I have seen with the EMV chip are the higher levels of the American Airlines AAdvantage Visa's.

I recently went on Twitter to Citibank's Twitter page (@AskCiti) and got an EMV chip for my Dividend World MasterCard. This was after making the mistake of calling customer service. @AskCiti is AWESOME.

Keep in mind, that like Chase, Citi's EMV cards are currently Chip and Signature, not Chip + PIN. If you are looking for true a Chip + PIN card, the only one readily avaialble in the US is from Andrews Federal Credit Union. Anybody can join but it takes a good 3 weeks or more to get the card. Be prepared to have to provide financials when applying.
