How soon can I apply for another credit card?

Postby PopiLopi » Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:02 am

I'm 25 yrs old, personal income about $45k a year, moved to the US about 1.5 yrs ago and now I'm afraid to apply for the Chase Sapphire because my credit history is 1 yr old and I have "too many recent inquiries." I've never been late on a payment, pay all my balances in full every month, utilization ratio is about 8%.

These are the accounts I currently have:

  • Cap One Journey CL $750 (04/2011)
  • DSNB Macys CL $200 (04/2011)
  • Discover More CL $1250 (07/2011)
  • GECRB Amazon CL $1900 (12/2011)
  • Amex Zync Charge $1700 spending ability according to a rep (03/2012)
  • Chase Freedom CL $1200 (04/2012)
  • TD auto finance car loan with $8150 balance, 46 months remaining
I just got the Chase Freedom to get the 35k bonus offer earlier this month and was approved by calling their reconsideration line. What I'm trying to do is accumulate as many points as possible there and eventually use the Sapphire to transfer them into either British Airways or United.

How soon until I can I apply for the Sapphire card?

I greatly appreciate your input since I'm kinda new at all this

Your credit is still too new for a card of Sapphire's caliber. I am not 100% certain, but I believe that all Sapphire's are World MasterCard's or Visa Signature's and Chase requires at least $5,000 credit line for them.

You have done very well in a short amount of time (Discover and Chase Freedom), but you need at least another year. Once one of your other credit card's hits the $5,000 credit line, you can use that as a sign that your credit has improved enough for Sapphire. You could also, after a year, ask Chase to change your Freedom to a Sapphire.

Thanks for the input!!

In the meantime I think I can earn points in the freedom, have them transferred to my boyfriend's Sapphire and then into United or British

Not at all, but I do go to Barcelona frequently and Iberia and AA are partners with British so I can get on their non-stop flights out of Miami...

I wish you could transfer to American from Ultimate Rewards, that'll make everything easier!

have you considered Amex's delta cards...if you travel quite frequently they are well worth the AFs.

I have considered them, but they barely have flights from where I live, you always have to go to Atlanta and I find that very annoying, the airline card I've considered is the Citi AAdvantage because you can get almost anywhere non-stop from here

My wife has been a legal permanent resident a few weeks shy of one year and is already getting mail offers. She is an authorized user on all my accounts so maybe "piggy backing" works after all. I'm wondering when we should pull the trigger on her getting her own card. What did you do to get started with credit?
