Decided to go with USAA exclusively.

Postby UPS Gregg » Thu Mar 01, 2012 8:54 pm

I've been researching many cards and have decided to ditch my Amex Zync and Premier Rewards Gold card and go exclusively with USAA Bank. I've only been using credit card points for gift cards and don't see the value in paying annual fees so I applied and was approved for a Visa Platinum from USAA with a $15,000 CL. My Experian FICO is 779 so I figured I would get approved. I will get the same exact point values I've been getting from Amex but can elect to use them for cash credited to my account at the same value and points for cruises are worth allot. I'm also sick of not being able to use my Amex card every where and I never planned on keeping the PR Gold and planned on cancelling before the annual fee starts. I only applied for it because of the sign up bonus points and I figured out that I could combine them with the points that I STILL hadn't redeemed from the Zync. $300 in the bag! ;)

I already have a MasterCard and Amex from USAA but the MasterCard CL is so low $1000) that I don't want to use it. It would hurt my utilization percentage. It will take years to get it raised to a safe limit because of recent credit card laws. The USAA Amex has a high limit ($15,000) but that's still only one card and isn't accepted everywhere. But no annual fee though. USAA is sweet because all my accounts will be on one site and if I do decide to spread my spending across all three cards my points still go into one pool. My FICO will drop a few points for the app but I pay my balances in full weekly so I hope to recover fast . Now I need to cancel my Zync and PR Gold.
Current FICO: 805 (Equifax)

*USAA Platinum MasterCard CL-$1,000.00
*USAA Signature Visa Card CL-$15,000.00
*USAA Rewards Amex CL-$15,000.00
*HSBC Best Buy Card CL-$3,300.00
*Amex Macy's CL-$8,000.00
*JPMorgan Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Signature CL-$20,000.00

I am actually considering what you are doing, except I'm still in the 1st yr. free stage, so if I like my Amex, I think I still might keep it, but I like USAA, and who knows, I might add it to the collection lol...any reason why you decided on the visa platinum vs. the other cards they offer???

They only offer Visa, MasterCard, and Amex. I already have their MasterCard and Amex. As far as I know they don't have Visa Signature but I could care less about all that. I'm just glad to be getting away from annual fees and all my spending will be on one website.

I have both the AMEX and World card. CL for the AMEX is at 10k and world at 7.5k. I'm very happy with both. I'm wondering if I should go with the Visa since these are the only two credit cards I have at this time.

I am liking this so far. Having all my cards on one website along with my car insurance, life insurance, and almost everything else is so much easier than bouncing back and forth between multiple sites. After my Amex PR Gold and Zync points have all completely been updated I will cash out and then close both accounts. I was thinking about keeping the Zync just to have another account with age but decided not to. I will just stick to the plan of using my three USAA cards. I'm so glad to be getting rid of annual fees soon. Or as Dave Ramsey calls them "Stupid Taxes". LOL!

Glad to hear you're happy with this arrangement, sounds like a good plan for me, except I'm not military, so I can only use the credit cards :( but, I take what I can get lol!

On another note, did you ever try calling Amex to waive the fee for your PRG???

You should call Amex and see what you can work out. Also, I wouldn't close any of the other accounts since that will hurt your score. How long have you had the cards that you are planning to close?

No. They might once or when I cancel it but I would have to pay it eventually. I know of several people that were offered 15,000 points to stay but I still wouldn't change my mind.

Closing the PR gold by itself won't hit my score because of backdating but I do plan on cancelling the Zync as well. So, I'd basically be cancelling two cards but only one at the expense of my credit score. I don't mind my FICO dropping a few points briefly. I don't worship the almighty FICO like some others seem to. LOL! I've been an Amex "member" since July 2010.
