Chase Sapphire Reserve Bonus Being Cut in Half

Postby yfan » Thu Jan 05, 2017 12:28 am

According to CNBC, Chase will be reducing the bonus to 50,000 points from 100K on 1/12 online and on 3/12 in-branch.

There's a full on funeral going on over at MF about this.

CSR still seems like a good product even if the sign-up bonus is only 50,000 points.

It most certainly is, for those who find ur points a currency of choice. Given its excellent everyday rewards structure, it's not a bad card even if one discounts the bonus entirely.

I think this is a good move. Everyone knew that it would not last forever and the only ones that are going to be deterred are those who are only getting it to churn for cash. Those who actually use it for travel can still make $750 after the AF (50K x $0.015 + $100 GE + $300 TC - $450 AF). Better that they cut the bonus then the benefits such as the $300 credit.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

Agreed it's still a good card for people who know how to use it. I suspect the new bonus will only deter people like a co-worker who got the 100k and used it for cash back.

I'm in the garden, but I'd definitely earn back the annual fee with the travel credit and on the 3X travel and dining.

They will cut out a lot of the card churners and get people who will be using it for the rewards which is their actual clientele anyway.
Chase Sapphire Reserve Visa Infiniti $59,500
Bank of America Cash Rewards Visa Signature $47,500
American Express Blue Cash preferred. $35,500
Capital one Quick Silver Visa Signature $25,000
USAA Limitless Cashback Visa Signature $25,000
Experian 838 Transunion 833 Equifax 855

I got my fiancé to signup last night. We have about 300K in HHonors points. With an additional 100K from this to transfer to Hyatt for a hotel she wants to stay at on Maui, and having just booked our flights through FlyingBlue (via the phone since their website doesn't work :beat: ), we should have a very low cost honeymoon! We have another payment to make for our venue which will cover half of the minimum spend for the bonus, and some other things we need to pay for anyway, so I'm not worried about reaching the $4k in 3 months. She's not a fan of annual fees, so I had to explain the points being valued at up to $1500, and the $300/yr in travel credits, global entry, etc. Worst case - we reap the benefits this year and then downgrade to to FU next year.
Main Cards:
Amex: Ameriprise Plat, Surpass
Chase: Hyatt

Sock drawer Cards:
Amex: HHonors
Chase: Amazon Rewards, Freedom
Citi: Macy's Amex, Simplicity, ThankYou
Citizens Bank: Cash Back Plus World
Discover: it
Elan: Bank Rewards
Synchrony: PayPal
