Barclay Luxury and other cards- unethical treatment

Postby HumptyDumpty2016 » Fri Dec 23, 2016 6:31 pm

Every time you apply for a credit card credit line increase Barclays does a hard credit pull. They are not up front about doing this and they hurt your credit knowingly.

I have had 9 hard inquiries by Barclays in the past 3 months!

I am disgusted and closing all of my accounts.

Several issuers will do a HP when you ask for a CLI. You are applying for more credit, after all.

Yea. Not to be insensitive, but this is wholly your fault. I agree it's not ideal for them to do what they do, but you agreed to the pulls.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige

I don't know what other cards you have from them, but Luxury doesn't offer much unless you get the AF waived.

Sorry, but gotta disagree with you that it is unethical. Anyone who's been in the credit game for any length of time, and in many ways it is in fact a game, should consider the axiom: in credit matters all inquiries result in a hard pull until proven otherwise. Meaning, going in, every person making a request from a lender should assume that they will do a hard pull on one's credit report. If they only do a soft pull, so much the better. However this should not be the expectation. As others have said, you're asking for more credit. There is nothing unethical about a lender making sure you are credit worthy, and if that means a HP, then it should be expected...whether they tell you or not.

Along the lines of anticipating hard pulls, note that some banks may even do a hard pull when a customer wants to move some or all of a credit line from one card to another with the same issuer. Barclaycard doesn't (that I've heard). I think Citi and/or BofA often do.

Barclaycard will also sometimes give automatic limit increases, or soft pull increases over the phone. They also tend to pull TransUnion, which is nice a nice balance considering that Chase and Amex, and to some extent Citi, often pull Experian.

Most credit card issuers will tell you if a hard pull is being done. Barclays, Amex, Chase, do not tell you they are doing hard pulls when you request increases. Discover, Citi and some others tell you outright that if they need to do a hard pull they will notify you first so you can decide if you want to proceed

Chase and AmEx will tell you if you ask. I have no experience with Barclay's; never had a card with them.

If you learn anything from this experience, it should be this: Always ask.
