Or, for that matter, call several lenders. You may have some special BT offer available. Some people (not me) get surprisingly good offers from Chase and Barclaycard, too.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

Agreed. I usually have one pending from Citi or BoA at most times. They're not really good offers, but they're BT offers. I don't need one, but I assume you could negotiate better terms or at least try.

Overall, I like Citi, they have this useful online chat feature that is really helpful in addressing questions. I've also had good over-the-phone service with them as well.

I've never had any big issues with them.

I read Citi was one of the better (and longest) for B/Ts, and they have good customer service. After I pay it off I could see it as part of the rotation.

Any Citi members have any tales, good or bad, to share?

Their customer service isn't top of the line at all, in my opinion anyways. Sure there will be a rep you can chat with 24/7 but those reps aren't knowledgeable in the slightest. One time one of their reps told me contactless was being phased out. Another made a mistake of accidentally copying and pasting directions a supervisor was giving them for a basic question. Trust me, Citi's reps are idiots and they all speak heavily accented English which you can barely understand.

I just product changed to the Diamond card though, it seems ok if it's a backup card after the initial BT offer.

I have been with Citi for 2 more years and this morning I decided to close all my accounts with them just over a late fee charged of $25. They have horrible representatives (both chat and call). I found out that I missed the payment due date just one day, and I chatted with them to explain. The first rep told me to make a payment and when I have the payment confirmation number, contact them back to ask for a waiver. Ok, I made the payment right that time. I even offered her the payment confirmation number, but she said I needed to wait for it posted. Contact back later. Sure.

This morning, I chatted with them again to request the waiver. They told me it was declined. I told them to look at the previous chat and see what I was promised. He said unfortunately. He told me to call their 800 number and I called. Wait for more than 30 minutes on the line and they said no. I said this was my first time ever I have made a late payment. It was not my intention, it was a slip out of my mind. And my bill management app did not alert me. He said bank errors is not a good reason for this waiver. I said could you consider this was the first time and waive it? He said unfortunately.

Well, unfortunately on my part as well!!

P/S: Please spare me from all the blame it was my fault or something like that. Everyone makes mistakes here and there, but the way they treated customer by going around, tell them to do this and didn't honor their promise was the main reason for me to cut my business with them.
All my posts are my opinions. All my posts mentioned "you" are merely for discussion-purpose only. No advice is given in any post at any time. It is also impossible for me to put effort to verify every statement that anyone has given.

I read your PS, but still feel it's necessary to mention that this is in no way their fault and they have no obligation to do anything. It's not that big of a deal really. Closing your accounts in a huff could potentially set you backwards on credit scoring etc. Not worth it. Just don't use the cards if you don't want...I'd just relax and think it over when you're calm if I were in your shoes.

Daniel,

Which Citi accounts did you close?

Some cards advertise that they forgive the fee on the first late, but other than that I wouldn't count on it.

What exactly did the first CSR on chat say? Maybe you meant to tell us that the CSR promised a fee waiver in chat once the payment posted (in which case a screenshot would be good). Taking what you have said literally, though, the first CSR didn't promise you anything...but simply told you that the time to request a fee waiver would be after the payment had posted.

I have three Citibank cards; a 1998 Diamond Preferred Visa, a 1999 Thank you Premier (was an AT&T Universal) World Elite MasterCard and a 2000 Dividend World Elite MasterCard.

Over the years I have found Citibank to be an agreeable bank. They allow product changes with ease-once they account has been opened a year (except Simplicity, from what I understand they are not able to be upgraded); generally will at least check for APR reductions (they refuse to give them to me but did in the past and currently other customers) and their soft inquiry credit line increases are great-they tend to be smallish but over time add up.

I no longer call their 1-800 number on the back of my cards as I always get a foreign representative (I know, a lot of banks do this) that is difficult to understand and does not have the authority to do much to service my requests (this is true with most banks as well). However, I have since turned to their social media teams on Twitter and Facebook and have been very impressed. Only the best, senior reps can be on the social media team so you know you are getting someone from the States that can assist you.

Another thing I like about Citibank is that they often times are the first bank to bring new technologies to market. My Dividend was my first EMV chip card; got it in June 2011 with no hassle long before other banks even offered them or only offered them to high wealth clients.

Citibank has also really stepped up their game recently in terms of rewards. ThankYou points, while still third place behind Chase's Ultimate Rewards and Amex's Membership Rewards, have become a lot better and easier to use. Then of course there is the Double Cash card that offers 2% cash back.

My only complaint lately with them is their card designs. Citibank has recently redesigned almost all of their cards to be un-embossed with the information on the back. I really do not care for that; when Chase does it I do not mind because it looks upscale, but the Citibank cards not so much. This is subjective of course. I am also anxiously awaiting to see what happens with my Visa. Citibank recently signed an agreement with MasterCard that is similar to what Chase signed with Visa. Chase changed all existing MasterCards (expect IHG) to Visa so I am hoping that Citibank will not change my Visa to a MasterCard. It was my first Visa and I have grown attached to the account number.

I think there are way better cards out there than what Citibank has to offer for the most part; but I think you will be happy with Citibank overall. Do not forget about Citibank's online shopping mall and be sure to check the offers on your account. These work similarly to BankAmerideals and the Amex Offers. I have to admit though that Citibank makes it hard to locate these offers on their website.

Embossed cards within information on the back is becoming the norm. Soon magnetic stripe will go the way of the clank machine and the clank machine will disappear completely. Citi is just ahead of the curve like they were with EMV. My first EMV card was a Citi card back in 2014.

Personally I like the new design of the ThankYou Preferred as it creates consistency with the Prestige and TY Premier, but they obvously were too stupid to understand that I wanted to switch from the old design to the new design, but they sent me the old design two more times before I finally gave up.

BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It
