Chase Mileage Plus

Postby Tubpbs » Wed May 25, 2016 8:53 pm

I was/am interested in this card for potential long term use. The primary area of interest is for free checked bags.

I just did some very light additional research on this and it seems that the credit would only apply if you've purchased the TICKETS for the flight with the United Card, not just the baggage fees themselves. In theory, the majority of flights on a going forward basis would be paid for with points from various sources. This would mean that I wouldn't get the baggage fees reimbursed most likely if the tickets were purchased with points and not with the United card.

Does anyone have first hand experience with this card and the baggage fee reimbursements?

I am very curious to learn about your experiences.

Thanks for any replies.

According to the terms if you pay for the ticket with the card you aren't charged baggage fees so there's no reimbursement.

Some have experienced that even if they don't use the card to pay for the tickets that the fees are waived since the card is linked to their MileagePlus profile. However, be careful relying on that as others have experienced the opposite. It can depend on the agent at check in as well. I was talking to one who said that she could manually waive the fees for me since she saw that I was a cardmember.

I don't think I've paid baggage fees on award flights. IIRC even with mileage redemptions there's a fee you have to pay and that may be why I have not as I would have paid my fee with the card.

Also, the baggage fee discount only works on United flight. United has a big problem with flight delays, and will frequently rebook passengers on other airlines. If they do that, you get stuck with baggage fees, and no, United will not reimburse you.

That's interesting. I figured it was something along those lines. I don't know yet if it will or won't be worth it. I have close family in Houston so if I'm going twice or more a year, the baggage fees more than pay for the card ignoring all else. I'm not doing anything yet, but I am interested.

Thanks for the input.

Haha. I know you love United. You should be their spokesperson. I wouldn't expect them to reimburse me, though I would want them to.

Had a fight earlier this year (Virgin - not United) from Dallas to NYC, there was bad weather. Flight circled for hours and then landed in DC. Their solution (even though the weather had ended and they lied about that to all of the passengers) was to wait three hours and then put us on a BUS to NYC. It was one of the most enraging experiences of my entire life. The worst part was that I knew exactly what they were doing two hours before we landed and they were stringing everyone along about taking back off (even they they unloaded the plane). I knew they were out of gas and there was no way they were paying thousands or tens of thousands to refuel the plane, but I did at least think they would fly us out in the morning on a shuttle.

I was very disappointed to say the least. They also sent me an email in the middle of all of this that I can cancel my flight until midnight (this was at like 1130) and the link / process didn't work and it couldn't actually be cancelled. It was a series of dog shit moves.

Rant concluded. But I could start back up whenever anyone needs me to.
