New card: Barclaycard CashForward

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Tue Oct 20, 2015 11:06 pm

Barclaycard has a very unexciting new card. 1.5% cash back with an unimpressive 5% "next redemption" bonus.

$100 signup bonus for $500 spend, but currently available only by invitation.

It looks like a Rewards card without bonus categories.

*I suppose it's good for mid-stage rebuilders, but Rewards already fills that role for them. CashForward really shows a lack of imagination.*
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

Interesting. Baby steps I guess. Beats the CapOne QS with the signup bonus and 5% bonus...

A 5% bonus is pretty darn tiny, though. I mean yes, it's better than nothing, but unless you are spending a ton, it's going to be pretty negligible.

Not to mention there are 2% cards anyway.

$50 minimum redemption, too. Pretty lackluster. It's got to be hard to complete in cash back cards since they are so straightforward.

Maybe this will be a PC option for me if/when they fully discontinue the SM. If so, it would probably get sockdrawered.

Primary Cards:
American Express EveryDay - $20,000 (10/14)

AU on Barclay Sallie Mae - $10,000 (8/15)
plus several store accounts of varying usefulness now

QS comes with a $100 bonus for $500 spend, so the only difference is the 5% towards next redemption.

Although it should have online-pseudo-PIN functionality, it has a 3% FTF so isn't good for travel like Arrival is.

Hmm, sucks I missed another reward then. Neither of my QS cards came with cash back rewards when I got them.

I don't know how old the card is, but the Stash Rewards Visa (Synchrony) is suddenly becoming popular on MF. Stash is a loyalty program shared by about 150 independently owned hotels.

The card itself doesn't offer much. The actual program is a reasonable idea and might be more appealing if it included more properties. Hyatt has about 4x as many, and those are hard enough to find as it is.

It seems likely that some of the people applying for this card may never actually set foot in a hotel where they can redeem the rewards.

Looks like a step in the right direction. This may actually be the Ring offshoot they were talking about with a potential "fixed to prime" APR of 12-16%.

Wow this is the first time I have learned about a new card here rather than at MF. I think Capital One should be flattered that Barclaycard sees them as their main competition. First Arrival/Arrival + and now this. Capital One-ish rewards with some lipstick....

Looks okay for the most part but whereas Capital One rarely nerfs a reward program, we have already seen that Barclaycard has no problem with it (and Chase, (Sh)iti and US Bank) so it will be interesting if the 5% redemption bonus will stay. As for me, I'd go with QS based on its stability, Visa Signature benefits and, in my humble opinion, better card design. And frankly, until (Sh)iti nerfs Double Cash, that one is the best overall cash back cards for now.

Actually, It looks like this card will be marketed to just those whom I was thinking of. Ring cardholders who want rewards. 14.99% APR with similar U/W ain't too shabby TBH. If the rewards post as quickly as with QS then it won't be all bad especially considering Barclaycard routinely sends out mailers for bonus earnings.
