Apply online or by phone for credit card, Which is better?

Postby nydisneykid » Mon Oct 19, 2015 11:57 am

Does it make any difference to apply for a credit card online or over the phone? Is there any advantage over one or the other?

Been reading the forum for a long while now. First post.

I would say the advantage to me of applying online is that I can visually confirm that the information on the application is complete and accurate vs. having an agent fill in the blanks over the phone and repeating everything back and forth. In terms of odds of approval, I would assume there is absolutely no difference at all.

Good Question, but I can tell you when I called for my last two cards the CS was great. I needed additional questions about the card that wasn't listed online. Its great especially if is a card company that you all ready have service with!

When I applied for my first Amex, I got a great bonus applying online.

When I applied for my second, I used some funny link not meant for existing customers and somehow didn't get the bonus ($100) . I've milked it for some good offers, though, while hardly giving Amex any real business on the card. :ppp

When I applied for my third, I applied over the phone and asked the CSR to check exactly what bonus I was eligible for. I got it without any trouble.

I suppose if you have mixed/irregular/unusual sources of income, then applying over the phone might be helpful since a (smart) CSR can help you determine what to include. If the CSR doesn't sound smart, I'd apply online.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

Doesn't really matter as the method won't change your credit or income. Use whatever you prefer.
