The end of Sallie Mae Rewards?

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Sat Sep 26, 2015 10:14 am

As kdm previously mentioned on MF, the usual application link for Barclaycard Sallie Mae Rewards (the 5% gas/grocery/books one) is no longer available.

More observation/discussion/speculation (but not actual official information) is here: http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Sallie-Mae-strange/td-p/4249839
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Of course, some people think I'm just being overly paranoid, but realistically not only is the application link gone but the card is not mentioned ANYWHERE on Barclaycard or on Sallie's website. Doesn't bode well. Some on MF are spewing the "it's just a website update!" thing, but I think that's just sour grapes. Why would a website update cause one card to cease to exist, but all others are mentioned just fine?

I don't care as like I said, I don't have the card anymore anyway. I just found it interesting because it's one of the most lauded cards and now it very well may come to an end.

I also find the MF people who feel they are entitled to be grandfathered in forever annoying too. Yes, it's nice if they grandfather existing users in, but they have no obligation to do so, and even if they do, it will not be forever. Eventually, the cards will be changed to something else. Some people just live in denial I guess!

"If you don't keep paying me 5% cash out of your 2% fee every time I use the no-AF card I don't pay interest on, I'll just take my business elsewhere!"

(I don't think we have much leverage here.)

Based on Aviator spend? Or their fear of vanishing like 18 minutes of tape?

Some people on MF are saying that they took a survey recently about Sallie's benefits and such. Why anyone would think that means the card will not change makes me laugh.

They're probably doing a survey to see which benefits are the most used, and will possibly bring back the card with far lesser benefits than before -- or perhaps ONE 5% category, or something like that.

But I think the chances of it staying unchanged are very unlikely at this point.

It also kind of makes me chuckle that people are saying "well, I applied today and was approved, so I'm in!" umm...just because they approved you today doesn't mean they won't force you into whatever changes they make. There is no law that says issuers have to grandfather people in for rewards programs.

When Arrival was undergoing changes and was closed to new applications, the Arrival website did say the card would open again soon to new applications. I'm not aware of any such "reopening soon" notice for Sallie Mae Rewards.

Exactly.

I'm pretty sure that it is dead. If it does come back, it's not going to be in the same form it is now.
