CSP Travel Notification Needed?

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Thu Jun 18, 2015 12:44 am

Do you have to notify Chase of upcoming travel before you use the CSP, say, 1000 miles from home?

I know it's not an issue with Amex, which is one nice thing about PRG.

*Since I got CSP, my travel has all been within 150 miles or so.

I may be doing a road trip in a few weeks. I'm guessing I don't need to give Chase advance notice if I'm using IHG at one of their properties, at least. Hopefully I'll be through my Arrival bonus spend (again) by then and can get back to earning URs and MRs on most spending.

I don't and haven't had problems but YMMV. I'd say it's really a matter of preference. Doesn't hurt to place travel notifications. I'm just lazy though I will provide them when traveling internationally.

The only time I've had problems domestic was with Shell/Citi and I made it from Houston to Knoxville (via Forth Worth) before they started to decline.

Never had an issue traveling domestically, but it all tends to be under 500 miles. You can do the notification online and it's pretty easy.

I do notify them of international travel even if it is just Canada.

+1. Doesn't hurt to notify them. I did that on a driving trip pulling a trailer, knowing that I would be stopping frequently for fuel while driving across country. Have done it with Chase as well as other cards.

I actually will be going to NJ from Pittsburgh next week. From my experience (unless it's AMEX) it's better to put in a notification than not to and have a transaction decline.
My Cards

Chase Freedom Visa Signature: $5.2K
Capital One Quicksilver Visa: $7.5K
Discover IT: $5.5K
Huntington Voice World Mastercard: $1.6K

In the garden indefinitely.

Thanks! I'll give notifications to Chase, and have an Amex on hand if (when) I forget.

I've never notified Chase, AMEX, or Discover (main cards used) for travel. Never had it decline and am so happy for that.

Experimenting on a trip from NY to CA. No travel notification on any cards. Used CSP for a bus and train, transactions approved smoothly with no contact from Chase.

Both times, card was swiped (EMV chip not read).

I did a trip to California (all over the state, SF to SD - drove down) and to Texas a few months ago. Used CSP and several other cards. Definitely Prestsige and DC - had a hickup with DC at a seashell store for a medium purchase but I think it was the lady not wanting to run my card. It went through on the second attempt (both EMV attempts) with no issue or delay. I think I used my Dicsover, but I'm not sure. Used Amex cards on various places. No issues at all.

The only time I've ever had an issue with a transaction was in Italy. 2008. BoA froze my CC and my debit card. Then my brother bought the shit for me and they let the transaction go through and then froze his account after because he had made a purchase there earlier in the day. This was WITH very very explicit travel notifications on all of the cards they did it to. Though my brother's was more reasonable. (Also, when I called to complain and fix the problem, they acknowledged the note and call about being abroad and where I was going etc etc but said the person never did anything, just took a note).
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I did notice that Chase has changed the online notification link to say "International Travel Notification" so I would assume they have smart enough people to know when a domestic charge is legit vs fraud.
