BofA Card Compromised-Again

Postby CC Deville » Sun Jun 07, 2015 5:01 pm

Last week I logged into my online banking for BofA and received a pop up indicating that my Cash Rewards card had been compromised at an unknown point and that they were reissuing my account number but I could continue to use my current card until my new one arrived yaddah yaddah.

2 things:

1) This is the 3rd time since 2013 that this card has been compromised, yet they can't (or won't) tell me where (1 time was the Target compromise I know that much) the compromise stemmed from.

2) I still have not received the card; however, as it turns out my statement just generated so I took a look and the account number listed on the statement is very strange: my account is a Visa Signature; most, if not all, BofA Visa Signatures begin with the numbers 431307. This new one starts out 440066. For some reason this bothers me a bit.

Has anyone else been notified that their BofA card has been compromised? If so, did you get the new funky BIN of 440066 (Visa Signature)?

The weird thing is that I was using Freedom January through March this year due to the 5% groceries and only started using BofA again in April and it isnt' like I shop anywhere exotic....

No CC, sorry, that's never happened with my BofA card. I only had that happen to my Chase Freedom recently. But not with BofA.

Our Freedom was compromised last Sunday. 3 charges of $50 on iTunes within 2 minutes. Old card and the new card are both Visa Signature, even though it doesn't say it on the card, but the first 4 digits are the same as the pre Signature number. I don't think they change the number when it is upgraded to a Visa Sig.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Weird, so two people with recent compromises on their Chase cards. I never even had any fraudulent transactions appear on my account all three times it has happened, but they must be seeing something I didn't. Regarding Chase (and a lot of issuers these days): it is true that they do not usually change the BIN when a card is upgraded; BofA is very BIN specific on their cards so this 440066 must be new. I just don't think I care for the double zeros.

Thank you for the responses.

My BoA cash rewards was also compromised and I received a new one. The old one stayed functioning for about 2 weeks after the notification. They changed the credit card number completely. No details as to where it was compromised. I just hope that it won't report on my credit report as a new card cause I really need the history.

And it's so annoying having to change the card details in my various online accounts again... which might actually have been where it was compromised in the first place...

Yeah, I am irritated by how many times this card has been compromised. My Citi, Chase, Discover, Amex, Cap One etc have not been compromised. This card was compromised twice in 2013 (once at Target) and now once this year. I mean, I am glad they have my back, I just wish they would tell me which merchant it is happening at because then I will not go there anymore. I have had this card since 2001 and I am on my 7th account number.

Is yours a Platinum Plus or a Signature?

Mine is just a regular Cash rewards - tied to a secure account actually.

I wish I knew too because I would consider not using that site/store again. I don't get why they don't tell the customer. It affects our accounts and potentially information other than the credit card number so I would think we'd have a right to know
