We have seen people get an amex with a low 600s score, and others get declined with a high 700s. Treat the score like the thermometer, it only tells you part of the story as to what the weather will be.

I have to wonder if Barclaycard cites "too many new accounts" as a denial reason when an applicant has a new card every three months - or every two weeks. The actual number of new accounts that it takes to make them uncomfortable may be higher than most people realize, if the reports are from people with an abnormal number of new accounts.

I think it's always "YMMV". I myself have a boatload of new accounts, but when they denied me for a CLI it wasn't mentioned - all they mentioned was I had in their opinion too much available credit. That was the only reason listed.

So I think it just depends on the individual and their profile. It's of course possible had they not denied me for that reason they would have denied me for too many new accounts, we'll never know. But I would still think it just depends on the individual's profile and history with them.

I've seen numerous posts saying Amex is "inquiry sensitive", but personally I have never experienced that. I've had plenty of inquiries and they have never denied me for that reason. It really just all depends, though we can say for sure that the more new accounts you have the more likely you are to draw their attention in a negative way.

Wow...I only just realized this card (my Arrival) doesn't even have an intro 0% period...

Good thing I PIF!

*Sallie Mae had one, so I expected this would, too. CSP and IHG don't, either, but I was aware of it for those when applying.*

So after being denied for the Barclay Reward card I called the recon line and was shocked when after a lengthy conversation they approved me for the Barclay World Advantage Plus MC with a 5 k limit. I had not even mentioned that card to the rep. A little history: The first time I called the recon line (last month) the rep would not budge. I guess perseverance pays off!. :)

I think "Advantage Plus" is actually meant as "Arrival Plus" from Barclaycard. Only Citi issues "AAdvantage" cards.

It does pay off. Barclay's and Cap One are kind of different animals in the credit world compared to most lenders, but isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I was also able to call them and talk them into a card after a denial several years ago now. I will say that the analyst mentioned to me that they really do not like to see a lot of new accounts and at the time advised me to cool it on the apps. Of course I did not take that advice, but you can't win em all....

I just used the Arrival shopping portal for the first time, and was fairly impressed (assuming I get all my rewards - I'll report back if I don't).

I was getting some new sneakers at shoes.com. I've worn the same model for a long time, so I haven't had to try a new pair on for years.

Discover gave the base 1% plus 15% bonus. Double that, and it was 32% cash back. Sounds hard to beat, huh?

Arrival offered 8 "miles" (8.8% cash back). I'm not sure if that includes the base 1.1% or not. But the Barclaycard portal also suggested a coupon that saved me 25% right off the top - a coupon that (officially, at least) Discover would not permit. Discover does sometimes give a bonus on products the portal isn't officially supposed to reward.

So assuming I get 1cpp for Discover, and 1.1 cpp for Arrival, the effective savings would have been:
Discover: 32%
Arrival: 31.6% or 32.4%

Since my Arrival needed (and still needs) minimum spend, I put the transaction on Arrival.

So not bad for Arrival!

The Arrival is a good card. Any issue there isn't really the card, but more likely, dealing with Barclays.

I actually like the card. Just not sure I like Barclays.

For what it's worth, I don't see myself at this time keeping it when the AF hits, but that's always subject to change. Currently my feeling is I'd prefer to give the swipes to lenders who have shown me they want the business. Oh well I have a little less than 6 months to go before that hits so we'll see. Not holding my breath on it.

Well, my no-AF version is still a bit lacking when it comes to travel purposes. For occasional online use, though, it seems to be worth keeping.
