Confused for new card choice

Postby pswinontario » Thu Apr 30, 2015 11:34 am

I am really so confused for chase freedom and discover both 5% cash back.

I do not know which 1 should I go for?

Both have advantages and disadvantages, but they aren't different enough to make one "better."

Discover has a few neat features, But Chase has UR points, which work with other cards.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Yes. Get both.

There is a $150 CB link for $750 spend link around for Discover. If you can't find it, PM me.

Personally, unless one doesn't mind many cards, I think obtaining two cards that are virtually identical is overkill.

The only time I could see having both is if you're using the Freedom with your CSP. In that situation maybe, but then you really don't need the Discover.

The categories are more or less the same during the year. The cash back is the same. There's really no reason to have both of these cards. Just my opinion.

For OP - I vote Discover. Better, broader categories (home improvement vs just Lowe's, online shopping vs just Amazon). You don't need a Freedom really with the Discover (why would you use Freedom for Amazon when Discover covers all online shopping, etc).

Go with Discover.

I like having both.

Without knowing anything about your credit history, I can't guess your odds for either.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

You need to tell us your needs/wants/preferences/priorities if you want recommendations. Selecting cards is always about what best suits the individual. You have to give us your criteria for narrowing it down. Why did you select these two in the first place? What are you specifically looking for from a new card?

FWIW I find both useful but that doesn't really mean anything unless your needs/wants are similar enough to mine.

They're different enough for me. As with any subjective matter YMMV. What really matters though is the OP's take. We don't know, for example, if the OP can better leverage UR points or not and that could play a role in the decision. The OP hasn't provided enough information and we can't just recommend what we prefer and/or rely on assumption.

I know you're saying it's your opinion but "I don't see a reason" != "there is no reason".

I don't see a reason for a lot of things yet plenty of other people do. Plenty don't see the reasons that I see either.

I need best reward and I think 5 % is the best way to get it. for gas definitely everybody use card at gas station. for grocery, yes like shop rite and for restaurant like subway and taco bell. I only go subway, tacobell and Mac D. I rarely use Amazon .

5% sounds good, but I don't think the Freedom is going to be the best card for you. I think a more general card like the Amex BCP or EDP, Sallie Mae, or even a Double Cash.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k
