Bonus categories on Citi AA Executive card

Postby Battery111 » Sat Apr 11, 2015 9:01 am

Got an email this morning from Citi. It seems they're now doing bonus categories on the AA Executive card. I have no idea if this is a test market type thing, since I don't see it mentioned on their website, or if it's just being quietly rolled out to all customers. I'm also uncertain whether it is limited to the Executive, or if the Platinum is included as well.

The bonus categories for this quarter are department stores, restaurants, gas stations, and grocery stores. All of these earn 3X AAdvantage miles. However there is a limit of 2,500 miles across all categories, which seems a bit low to me. Still, glad to see them trying to entice customers to make this card a more frequent go to, as I suspect there are many like myself that mostly just use it for purchases on AA for the double miles. Or for MS, which I don't do.

I think (S)hittybank realized that their cards were no longer as competitive and are working on ways to make them better. I received a letter this morning on my Dividend that starting on 4/19/15 they are ending the $50 redemption requirement and are adding the ability to cash out the reward with a gift card (in $50 and $100 increments). Furthermore, instead of sending out an old fashioned check, they will now do ACH directly into a bank account. Overall, good that they are catching up to Discover and Chase. I just wish their 5% bonus categories were actually useful to me.

I was actually fairly surprised how good the bonus categories on my offer are. Don't do a lot at department stores, but groceries, restaurants, and gas are my bread and butter. Now I have to decide if for restaurants I value 3x AA miles more than 5x UR or 5% cash back. I'll probably go for the UR, at least until I max it out, since I just got the 50k signup bonus on the U.S. Airways card and have already used miles to book my upcoming international trip in premium cabins, so I don't have any need for award travel on the immediate horizon.

I got one for Jan-Mar for transportation I think. I PC'd the card in Feb to a DoubleCash though and never looked to see if I got bonus miles. I'll have to try and look back if I can.

Grocery store would have been useful for me as I always max out my BCP half way through the year.

I just hope they increase the cap if this program continues. Even if you max out each category, you would only earn 10k bonus miles per year, which isn't even enough for a domestic one way ticket.

Is there a time limit on this? Around this time last year, I got a similar thing on my Platinum Select, but it lasted for just 3 months. Those would be some lucrative bonus categories to have around permanently!
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

Yes. It's only for the 2nd quarter, through the end of June. I would be interested to see if they start doing rotating categories, or if they're just doing something because Barclays is doing a 50% bonus miles on their AA card right now so citi felt the need to sort of compete.
