Postby tvirk888 » Fri Mar 13, 2015 11:52 pm

Got an offer in the mail for the U.S. Bank Cash+ card. Always read Discover and U.S. Bank are the harder banks to get approved for. Is it worth getting a HP for this card?

Yes, this card is good. But wait for your rewards to reach over $100 and they'll give you an extra $25. I usually cashed in right away which they gave me cash into my US bank checking account, before I knew they had this $25 bonus.

Also, you have to remember to sign up for your rewards every quarter to receive 5%/5%/2% otherwise its just 1%.

I applied, but they said my account is under review. Lets see what the recon department says tomorrow.

It used to be a great card but has been chipped away at to the point that it is not worth much to many but others might still find use in it.

It is my understanding; however, that while US Bank used to give an additional $25 bonus when redeeming $100 this has changed to only one bonus $25 per lifetime of the account.

Do I need to have a U.S. Bank account in order to get the Cash+? If so, why would they send me this offer, I wouldn't have applied.

Nope, no need to have a US Bank checking or savings account. They are one of the top 10 credit card issuers in the US (not a hard thing to do since all the banks have consolidated in the past decade) so they like to offer cards to people regardless of existing banking relationships.

Worth is always high subjecitve regardless of topic. IMO it was worth it when I applied and restaurants were 5% but no longer worth it to me. That said, you have to decide based on your needs/wants or clarify if you want feedback from others.

DIscover isn't hard to get approved for.

Nope. If it was required it would be indicated on the site and application.

I don't do too much brick-and-mortar shopping in the 5% categories. Discover and Chase's online deals make the card's actual savings rather limited for me (at least, after all the nerfs).

Cash+ is definitely harder to get than Discover.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

It does help to have an existing relationship with us bank through their other products and making sure you apply with your ARS and Sagestream reports frozen.

The Cash+ seems significantly less useful than it was previously. Most of the remaining categories are nothing I would be spending frequently on. Cell phone is nice, but it's pretty much self-capped at the amount of your bill; with my bill, you're talking around $6.50 in rewards. Which is nice, but not worth getting a new credit card over.

I don't shop at furniture, sporting goods, etc stores often enough to warrant obtaining the card. If it still had the 5% restaurants I'd be much more excited. As it stands now, not worth it to me, but depends on your spend as always. I also would be concerned about future nerfs that make it even worse and who knows, the card may just get discontinued entirely the way they have nerfed it!
