Why the CLI?

Postby LessIsMore » Mon Mar 09, 2015 10:07 am

I'm not complaining but this is a bit surprising. I recently got a Capital One Platinum MasterCard with a $3k CL. I've only had it for a little over a month and have only made one payment to it. But this morning, they sent me an email saying they were increasing my CL to $3.5k. Is this some sort of marketing ploy - to give someone a CL they "know" they'll be increasing quickly? Beats the heck out of me. I didn't ask for a CLI and I don't have enough history with the card to have "earned" a CLI. And, I'd like to think that CLIs aren't given out just for the heck of it ... that there has to be a reason behind it.

Any ideas?

I think it is a marketing ploy. That happened to me a month ago on Synchrony Brooks Bros. I started with a $1,260 CL and they added $300 about 2.5 months later "in recognition of the excellent manner in which [I] have managed [my] account".

Of course, all my other CLs at the time of approval (11/14) were $2k-$6k, and I know the BB card can have limits above $3k.

Sometimes I get auto CLIs. My Paypal Smart Connect was recently increased to 4.9k from 3.5k and I had tried asking them for one last month and was denied. Discover I think I've gotten at least one auto CLI from too.
Macy's TLs (21k), Lowes (17k), CSP (10k), Sam's Club (10k), Nordstrom (5k), AARP (4.2k), Freedom (3k), Discover (1.5k), Quicksilver (2k), BoA (3k), Barclaycard Arrival (2.5k), Amazon Store (6k), Paypal (4.9k), Sam's Club MC (3.6k), Walmart MC (1.2k)

FWIW, shortly after I made my first payment to CapOne, they "invited" me to take a survey. The first question was, "Would you recommend a Capital One card to a friend?" They gave me a 1-10 range from "never" to "extremely likely." I clicked on 5. The next question required text input - asking me why I chose the answer I did. I told them that getting a new CC was like getting a new car - that I'd never recommend a new car to a friend until after I'd put some mileage on it - to see how it performed. No more questions after that.

CLI's aren't just based on usage but on one's credit. That said, a $500 CLI does seem like a token CLI, however, it's impossible for any of us to tell you for certain why you received it. Call and ask if you really want to find out.

And in the grand scheme of things, is it really that important to know WHY they gave you an increase?

I got no CLI. On any of my Chase cards. However I've been mostly pumping and dumping for the spend bonus, moving on to the next one.

Maybe i'll see one on my recently acquired Ink Plus? I did max out it's limit on the bonus spend this past month... Lol.
