Sam's Club Mastercard

Postby solomon » Mon Mar 09, 2015 1:32 am

What are everyone's thoughts on the Sam's Club MasterCard?

-5% Back at Gas Stations

Q1. What is this about only being only to redeem once a year my cash rewards? How do I know when it comes?

Q2. What is this about I can only cash my check at a Sam's Club?

To answer both, it is very similar to Amex's TrueEarnings card that's cobranded with Costco, if you have any familiarity. I believe it also has one coupon come in per year for all rewards earned that can only be used at Costco.

I think it is a good card if you already frequent Sam's Club. I would be interested in it myself if I was still a member (I no long live close enough to one for it to be worthwhile). It may not have the most flexible rewards, but the rewards themselves are good. For those that shop at Sam's Club AND don't mind how the rewards are redeemed I think it is a pretty good deal (at least assuming one doesn't already have cards that perform well on those spending categories).

Most warehouse cash back's are annual including Costco-Amex. Amex also gives check redeemable at Costco.
that said, the 5% on gas for a total limit of $6000 is far superior to the 3% cash back with lower limit on Amex Costco. Plus this card has off-line pin, so it can be handy when traveling overseas for chip and pin format.

Does it have FTF's? I suspect it does, and if so, it would not be very helpful overseas. I'm not a Sam's Club member, though, and I can't find a way to view the card's terms without logging in with a membership ID.

I don't have a True Earnings card, but instead I use my PRG at Costco for warehouse and gas purchases. I would have trouble getting 3 cents of value per MR, so it's not the way to absolutely maximize my rewards. Saving 14% (last I calculated) compared to other local stations is where most of the savings lies.

A Costco clerk did recently try to overcharge me, though, when he entered the wrong item code. I think he knew he had made a mistake but didn't bother to fix it, figuring I'd overlook a $30 error in a $300 transaction. He was telling me to keep moving towards the exit so he could check out the next customers, but I made a fuss and hi manager fixed it quickly.

Mostly I've had a good experience shopping there, though.

The check which is made out to Sam's Club is sent after the February statement cuts and at that point, it can be taken to customer service for cashing or in my case apply to my credit account. This card is the only card I use for club and auto fuel purchases. BTW: 5% on gas purchases applies 365 days a year at ANY gas station.

I got an offer on my EDP for $20 off $20+ at samsclub.com. After factoring in shipping, I saved about $13 compared to what I'd pay elsewhere. That's a nice little quick reduction in the net AF.

I wasn't too surprised that they took Amex on their website, since Costco.com also takes non-Amex credit cards.

My actual question: Do Sam's Club stores still take Discover? Or just MC?

I'm not a member, but I could possibly go into a Sam's warehouse club on a road trip (and pay 10% more as the non-member surcharge). I'd like to stop carrying Sallie Mae in my wallet, and it's my only MC. I very rarely go into brick-and-mortar bookstores.
