Next card for college student?

Postby ericsf » Sun Feb 22, 2015 4:45 pm

Hi everyone! This is my first post on the CreditCardForum! ;) I am 19, currently have two credit cards with an average score around 705 (Credit Karma). Credit Sesame list my score at 713. I was wondering what I should do as far as improving my score. I have been on time with all my payments, my Aaoa is 6 months according to CK, and I have 8 hard pulls on both my Equifax and TransUnion. Some of those pulls are knocking off this year. I was just wondering if any of you have any advice on gardening and what other cards I should apply for? I really want to apply for the Chase Freedom but I'm going to wait a little longer after the inquiries drop off my report. As of right now, I have a Capital One Secured Card and the Wells Fargo College Card. My credit lines = $1400. Please let me know what advice you have!

Thanks in advance!

I would definitely wait to let those HPs drop off. 8 is too many with such a thin file. If you want to get a rotating 5% card you can go for the Discover IT for Students card. You are almost guaranteed to get it if you're a full time student. If you are set on the Freedom then it is not impossible for you to get it. You may have to call in to recon.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

I'd like to know more info about how long total you've been using credit. Chase likes to see roughly a year of history before giving someone like you a shot. If you don't get in with them, there's also the possibility of recon with them. How many inquiries do you have on EX or EQ BTW?

If you have about 6-7 months of history, I'd go ahead and see if there's anything from Amex that interests you.
