Pre-6 month CLI on two cards

Postby jcarte29 » Fri Feb 20, 2015 4:31 am

In another thread I have mentioned my two cards with 3k initial limits, my US Airways MC, and my GM Buy Power MC. GM card is 5 months old, USAMC is 4.

Here's my situation. I want to ask for CLI on both prior to their 6 month "birthdays" because I'm about charge a major ($2,400 est) flooring project on my Lowes Store Card, which is obviously gonna increase my total utilization 7 or 8 percent.

The question becomes will the flooring project derail my chances once it reports to the bureaus for CLI on the two cards, thus tempting me to ask for them sooner?

No idea. We can't tell you what your odds are for getting a CLI or if you'll even qualify for one. Generally speaking, lower utilization is better. You can pay down the balance on a card before it reports to adjust reported utilization.

My follow up to that is similar to what I spoke about in another thread about Cap One and Barclay. Do they typically allow CLI earlier than 6 months if my utilizations have been low (under 20 pct) and I've built a good early relationship? (6 months just seems to be standard I've come to know, outside of AMEX who let me have one 61 days after)

CapOne allows CLI's early and they are SP's...what more could you ask for really? All you have to do is login to your account and request it.

It's a soft pull, rather than hard pull. So, it doesn't show up on your credit report as more inquiries. Not everyone does this so it's a really good thing.

Well dang it.

I just requested a CLI on my Cap One Buy Power Card through the online portal. It first asked if I would authorize to a hard pull. Then it made me describe why I was using it (purchase, balance transfer, cash, as if I needed to explain what I was going to use it for, mainly just wanted to keep my utilization low) and asked my annual income blah blah.

Response was it would send me a nice little "decline, but have a nice day" letter in the mail within 7 to 10 days. grrrr I hate Cap One, I'm convinced they just hate me (I've had the same issue with my Cap One Quicksilver (AF version I inherited from Orchard/Sears dating to 2010).

I'll just wait for the 6 month mark of my US Air card. Thank you everyone for your help so far.

Then their policy must be different with partner cards. My Venture and Quicksilver(s) all do SP's unless I call executive offices and request a manual review for a much higher limit.

If you've had that Quicksilver for a long (6+ months) time with no CLI, try the SP feature online. If that fails, call executive offices and see if they can recon or at least change the card to a normal no-AF Quicksilver.

Crazy. They have been handing out decent limits on Venture and Quicksilver lately as well as giving people on credit steps early CLI's.

So quick update: My CapOne quick sent me a statement on why they turned down the CLI. They said they couldn't allow it because I received one back in November, for a WHOPPING $300. They are such a joke it's ridiculous. If it weren't my oldest card and a big part of my AAOC I'd cut it up right now.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. When I get an update from my BuyPower Card I will follow up on its explanation.
