AmEx Green crappy customer service

Postby MB131174 » Sun Dec 14, 2014 2:25 pm

I rarely use my green card, and will probably close it soon. I do, however, browse the offers to see if there are any good ones. I had one where I could get $50 back if I spend $150 at a Hyatt Place. Awesome. I needed a hotel and love Hyatt. Signed up, booked. Yay. Or so I thought. I never got the "thank you for using your linked card" email after the transaction went through. AmEx has always been quick to give the credit, even though they say it can take up to 90 days. I usually see it in 3 or so days. Well, it's been longer than that so I called them. I got some script reader saying it will take up to 90 days, even when I was saying I doubt it took it because I never got the confirmation email or alert on my phone. Ugh.

If you are connected to an overseas call center, expect the rep to be a script reader when it comes to these things.

Anyway,
  • Check the terms to see restrictions, what are eligible and what are not eligible.
  • If the transaction is posted for at least a day, go to "Added to Card" tab to see if that offer listed there has "Redeemed" status.
  • No email alone is not an indication of the purchase not being eligible.
For example,
Check out must occur on or before 2/28/15 to be eligible for the credit.

Would this mean not only you have to select a day no later than that for check out, but the check out must actually occur?

I once had an Office Depot offer and when I used my card there was no pending transaction, and I did not receive email. A few days later the transaction was posted, still no email, but I could confirm it was eligible for the offer, as it showed as redeemed. Never called them, but I got the credit only a few days later after posting.

This reminded me of one of their offers which I tried to take advantage of.

It was a deal of: Spend $20 or more at Walmart and get $5 back (I assumed it'd be $5 credit on my bill). I added the offer to my card. Went, I think, the very next day to Walmart to pick some things up - I remember it being well within the date limit. Didn't really think about it after that.

After reading this I went back and looked for the credit (I think the deal was back in October - it's well past when I'd have expected the credit). No credit.

It's only $5 and not the end of the world and I was going to buy those things, anyway. I am annoyed when someone gives me fake offers, though.

It's not worth me tracking it down but now it's not worth me looking at future offers.

There is nothing special about the customer service provided to Amex peasants (those with anything but platinum or centurion). Discover, Chase, FIA all offer customer service that is AT LEAST as good and frequently better than the basic Amex. That said, the offers provided by Blue Cash, for instance, are sometimes good and I've never had any problem getting them processed (I've used at least two). However, I bet that if I did have to call them, my experience would be similar to yours.

I wrote a post a while back in which I asked if Amex has cheapened their brand and you hit the nail on the head. It used to be you would get exceptional customer service no matter what Amex card you had. Sure, you might not get as incredible of an experience as someone with a platinum card, but you always got off the phone with someone who not only cared, but also understood you. If you have a green card, a PRG, or a revolver (especially one with no AF), you might as well be speaking to Crap One or GE Credit reps.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

First - my bad for this thread in the wrong section.

Second - After that experience, I'm just waiting for Discover to claim the top spot in customer satisfaction.
