It sounds like your complaints are more about Barclaycard (I'm assuming you switched to Bank of Hawaii later) than WEMC itself. I'm sure there are some Visa Sig cards with lousy terms, too.

I completely agree and yesterday I called to canx mine but was persuaded to keep it for one more year...My AF has been grandfathered to $50 for several years now. When years ago they raised it to $75 I successfully protested. On top of that, I have managed to get a $25 credit and 1000 bonus miles by calling each year. Now the card is certainly worth $25 a year, especially since we were flying inter-island multiple times a year.

Yesterday i called an indicated that even though my AF was only $50 this year I didn't feel it was competitive in it's offerings so I'd rather just close it. I was immediately transferred and the CSR offered to waive my entire AF and offer me a spending bonus. If I spend $1k in the next 90 days, I get 5k Hawaiian Miles. The spend will be no problem, in fact I will probably have met it by the end of the week.

I still feel the card is junk overall but for free and a spend bonus I will happily keep it for another year. It's also my second oldest account so I hate to close it...

rockyrock,

How much do you spend on the Hawaiian card each year? Do you give them a lot of business, or are they just very open to negotiating fees?

I've gotten my annual fee's worth on the card in my view already - I would have paid 175 for PRG and they charged me 350 for Platinum, but I've gotten reimbursement for pre-entry and other incidentals that pretty much already covered the extra cost so with further travels I'm just money ahead. The card is worth it if you travel.

Man I sound like an Amex commercial...

The Citi Prestige WEMC is a close comparison to Platinum. Both have the identical $450 AF, $200 travel statement credit, and offer lounge access. The edge goes to Platinum due to MR points being much more valuable than Citi ThankYou points.

My wife used the heck out of it in 2012 and 2013. She was swiping 2-3 times a day, I had to make two payments a month just to keep up. This past year we haven't used it as much, my wife only uses it when Amex isn't accepted. I hardly use it, in fact I'm only carrying it so I can spend the $1k for the bonus miles and then I will probably SD it.
