Impressed with Cap1

Postby kenzx » Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:54 pm

I've had a surprisingly pleasant time with Cap1 since I first applied for the Quicksilver card back in January 2014.

At first, I was a bit skeptical since they only started me off at $3000, but that was quickly raised to $5000. In less than a year, I've managed to raise that initial $3000 CL all the way up to $15,000. With lots of calls to the EO, I've also managed to get the once Visa Platinum card upgraded to Visa Signature and my APR reduced from 22.99% all the way down to 12.99%.

I've read many negative things about Cap1 on various forums, but perhaps they're starting to change for the better?

Congrats, getting a CL increased by 400% in 8-9 months is impressive!

There are definitely quite a few recent anecdotes about people having a pleasant experience dealing with CO's customer service and getting PCs and credit limit increases easily. On older threads, those pleasant experiences were pretty rare.

CO still has a lot to make up for in improving its reputation - especially in how it treated many of its long-term, low-risk Platinum customers who wanted a CLI or to PC into a rewards card but were told they couldn't and would have to get a new account. Some of those stories gave CO a reputation it deserved. People who had QS or Venture cards fared better in getting good treatment.

I still don't plan to get a CO card, as even if they had great customer service, I can find something better (for me) for every card CO offers with one of the issuers I already do business with.

Pleasant experiences with their customer service? Seriously? You're kidding right?

My experiences dealing with them, granted it's been years, consisted of them reading from scripts in accents so thick you could cut them with a knife making them hard to understand, but since they gave totally conflicting or useless responses, it didn't really matter whether I could understand them anyway. I'd have had more success just asking my Magic 8 ball most likely.

So are you saying they've changed that now? If they did I suppose they could only get better because it really could not get worse than I experienced.

My theory here is that CapOne tends to be better for people who actually have their better cards and crappy for people who get stuck with their rebuilder or secured cards with the annual fee and no rewards on them. I personally never had any problem with them and started out with a no annual fee college card when first getting in with them and it's grown faster than my toy limit student Discover It card.

I too have had my not-so-pleasant interactions with "Peggy" @ USA Prime Cre- I mean Capital One. Since I applied and was approved for a Cap One card last week... the GM BuyPower WEMC (yeah I don't know what's come over me lately- Comenity Shopping cart trick AND Cap One card) I figured I'd call their 800 number on the back of the card and see if their customer service had changed...

Overall, not too bad. Accent was a little worse than the CSR's Amex uses for their no annual fee revolvers, but better than GE's CSR's. She (Rose was her nom de plume) seemed to be a little knowledgeable about the card's reward structure. She said she wasn't able to change my due date (my "excuse" for calling) until one billing cycle which I was okay with and she seemed sympathetic about. Still, she seemed clueless when I asked about the WEMC benefits- good thing I already have the brochure. So better than it used to be, but not Chase, Discover or the higher tier Amex cards. Hopefully, I'll never really need to call for a stolen card or anything complex because I fear Rose might be okay at answering questions, but her execution might not be there when I need it...

Was just kidding... it was funny how quickly you jumped on that post. I think Cap One is the Rodney Dangerfield of CC companies. They don't get any respect, but as a company, I think there is a lot to respect. They've thrived by mostly catering to sub-prime customers and they've done it without gouging them, unlike First Premier, Credit One, etc. Are they cheap with CLI's? Mostly, yes. Do they cut corners by using dirt-cheap foreign CSR's? Yes, but their business model is successful- they've managed to expand into banking, investing, and now have 1000 brick and mortar branches.
