Got the letter from Chase today

Postby MemberSince99 » Mon Sep 08, 2014 8:28 pm

Outlining their "change in my Freedom benefits" I thought that's a nice way to put slashing my rewards.

Sure enough they let me know they are dropping the 10% bonus for having checking with them.

I guess that means I might as well shop around to see if I can get a better deal when I get caught up with the house. BofA offers that bonus with their card for example. I really don't see a whole lot of reason to stay with Chase for checking other than the fact that it's a PITA to change it. I don't use Freedom though to be honest so I'm not exactly heartbroken but if it was a big spend card for me I would not be too pleased. I don't plan to close any cards now, but if there were one I would close, it would be the Freedom, heck I never once used it for gas even with the 5% bonus so the card has become a bit pointless to me. I just think I'm probably not the target customer Chase is looking at and they are not the bank I'm looking to do business once. They have great CS on the CSP, they USED to give really nice rewards, and they can be generous but really we are not that great a match in the end. I have nothing against them, just acknowledging reality on the ground.

You seem to have other pretty good limit cards in your sig so I don't see anything wrong with closing the Freedom now if you don't want it anymore. Is there any other card with BoA that you'd be interested in changing your current card to?

I got that letter, too, even though I don't have any other relationships with Chase other than three CCs. Traveling full-time in an RV, we use a ton of fuel. I used my Chase through most of July for fuel but pretty quickly ran over the $1500 cap, so I switched back to using the AmEx BCP for its 3% cash-back on fuel (we get a lot of cash back that way - our typical yearly fuel usage is in the $12,000 range). The Freedom is probably going to be sock-drawered the rest of the year now that it's paid off. Fourth quarter's categories are not compelling, to be honest.
AmEx - Platinum (NPSL) , Blue Cash Preferred ($19,000), Gold Delta Skymiles ($8,500)
Chase - Sapphire Preferred ($14,000), Disney ($11,500), ($9,000), Freedom ($8,000)
CapOne - QuickSilver ($7,250) / Platinum Rewards ($7,250)

Why is Chase cutting all these benefits on their best card recently? :( The CSP still holds up I think with the insurance, but this is a huge blow to Freedom. If it wasn't for the fact that I was going to use Freedom for travel point on my future CSP, I might almost consider shopping for another card...

Chase Sapphire Preferred | 09/2014 | $10,300
Chase Sapphire | 05/2010 | $5,000
Chase Freedom | 01/2013 | $5,500
CapitalOne Quicksilver | 01/2013 | $2,500
American Express TrueEarnings | 08/2014 | $5,500
Victoria's Secret Angel Card | 04/2011 | $600

FICO | 09/2014 | Experian 738 | Equifax 706 | TransUnion 701

I'm just using it for a few recurring charges and 5% categories.

5.5% is better than 5%, but I'm not so unhappy with the changes as to pass on 5% when I can get it.
